the original head broke a long time ago and I have been using a cheap ball head but it gives way too easily with my heavier gear these days. Needed for indoor still life work with canon 20D dslr and typically a 60mm macro and flash gun. What would be a good head to buy - I understand that this is a 1/4" thread?

this is hopeless since I got better, heavier cameras:

Manfrotto 488. Separate pano and ballhead actions. Available in several release-plate versions, or with just a tripod screw.

Remember that most heads expect 3/8-16 screws, so you'll need an adapter. Like this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …EG&addedTroughType=search (external link)

Thanks guys, took your advice and bought a 488RCO today plus a 1/4"-3/8" thread adaptor. Certainly looks the part now. Slight creep immediately after setting but after I came back from 3 hrs of tennis it was still focused on the tiny target I set up so good job.

Yes, you'll almost always get a slight creep when setting an rig on a ballhead in an unbalanced way. "Almost always" because if you spend $300+ on a ballhead it will most likely not creep.

Hi
Do you still have the bush from the Slik 88 head?
If so do you want to sell it as mine was stolen.
Thanks for your time
Carin
