Well I got to use EOS-M today, and not a quick play in a shop either.

One of my students bought one in, and I spent a good 20min playing with it.
Very nice little camera, a LOT smaller than I expected, especially with the 22mm lens on it.
The LCD is easy to use, and the camera is very easy to hold and feels nice in your hands.

The AF IS slow. It is that simple. How slow? Well I have an A80 compact from 2003 and it felt that slow. If she brings it again next week I'll see if I can give them a race, but I wouldn't put on it.
Your not going to be snapping of photos in single shot mode the way you can with an SLR.

That said, in face detect mode it was faster, and quite usable for shooting people just sitting around. The continuous AF was also very effective, much better than I expected.
It would work well for video, and being able to focus using the touch screen was nice and worked very well.
Would be awesome for still life etc.

The biggest problem I found with it though was it was inconsistent, sometimes it would focus faster than others, often on the same subject.

The controls and interface etc were typical canon and easy to use, the touch screen is fast and responsive and quite intuitive.

I'm very tempted to try find one locally, even with the kit zoom lens its quite a compact little package.

Btw if anyone's interested in seeing just how slow the AF is, my post in the other eos m thread (https://photography-on-the.net …hp?p=15197620&postcount=3) links 21 different youtube clips showing the AF speed with various lenses (apologies for cross-post).

Everybody has their standards. Mine must be different than yours. As far as snobs go...what a bunch of crap. When I travel for thousands of mies, climb up a mountain for 6 hours, camp out waiting for the sunrise just to capture an image in the sweet light...you damn well I will bring along top notch equipment. There is nothing snobbish about it. In fact, I find your comment totally offensive and immature.

Hey, everybody... Peter Lik is a forum member!!! I guess we'd better watch what we say in the future!

I just watched a digital rev video of Chase Jarvis shooting a skateboarder with a lego camera....The EOS-M AF system can't be that bad. If it is, we adjust and keep shooting.

My EOS M arrives tomorrow so I'm excited.

I just used one along side a Panasonic GF5, the GF5 is amazingly fast, it just snaps into focus. Felt like using 1000D with a kit lens.
The EOS-M on the other hand had a comparable focus speed to my Samsung phone.

Otherwise the EOS-M was better in every way, the interface is easier to use, it felt nicer in my hand, the sensor is larger and delivers great IQ, and of course it has some nice little things like a mic input.

I owned a OMD since launch (just sold it though). I owned a X100 for 9 months and have shot with one with the newest firmware (which is a LEAP forward!). I've also used/owned the GF1 and NEX5. On MFT I use the slow 20mm. ALL OF THESE OPTIONS BLOW THE EOS-M OUT OF THE WATER AF SPEED WISE! It's that slow. I do find one of the comments above (I think by you moppie) that it's much better with face recognition on and or tracking as I'd be shooting kids with it 95% of the time anyway (and when I wasn't AF speed isn't crucial), but yeah, it was MAJORLY slower than my other compact cameras when I tested it at photoexpo (in great light). Hell the GF3 and 20mm I had with me beat it easily and that's not a fast pair at all.

Kai presented a new review video of the eos m, still complains about the slow af but I think this could be a perfect camera for traveling and making snapshots with dslr-like iq. In the beginning I was getting one but a 5d mk3 makes me change my mind, maybe next year I'll take one when price goes down a little and see if canon can speed up the af system

Its sucks being an early adopter. AF hype is real....The AF system is the major letdown to a stellar effort. Not recommended for kids sports, or anything that has a moving subject. The effort required to focus on a subject spoils the overall experience. But If your committed to EOS only, unfortunately this is the only game in town.

it's fastest with the little zoom.. only slightly slower with EF lens (I tried my 70-200 mkII).. also faster using the screen to focus and AF single
