I love DigitalRev's videos with Kai and crew and have watched the majority of the views on Canon cameras and lenses.

Maybe I'm just not remembering correctly, but I don't think he's very negative in most of his reviews. In fact, I've found it frustrating at times, because if he's doing a comparison review, he usually seems to come to the conclusion of "both are very good cameras, just different". So I've started taking the cynical view that because DigitalRev sells stuff AND because they probably want to maintain good relations with the various camera companies that probably supply some of the items to be reviewed, that Kai tries to avoid too much negativity in his reviews.

So when he does get a bit negative and points out a feature of a camera he dislikes (such as the AF speed on the EOS M) I take it pretty seriously

I'm not German. ;)

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

His review last week comparing the D600, D800 and 5D3 is actually pretty good. His was the first review I've seen that tested the D600 and D800 for fast action photography and not just landscapes.

I happen to find him very entertaining, the point of the EOS-M review was more to hassle Canon than review the EOS M.

I completely agree. He was having more than his usual amount of fun. And he probably figured, given the bad rep the EOS M has for poor AF (primarily from people who have never touched the camera), the joke of putting it through impossible situations (that even my 5DIII would struggle with) would satisfy his audience including people who found it amusing and others simply ready to agree that it's a crappy camera. Can't imagine why he'd feel that way...For what it is worth, I find most of his reviews funny and usually learn something useful from each one. This one was only funny and not much else.

Kai's reviews are brillant. He's a breath of fresh air in the camera review world, compared to who is out there he actually has a sense of humour!

If you couldn't get the jist of what the camera is about from the review there is something wrong.

I just wish canon would bring out a full frame version like Sony.

I'm sure the sensor is an excellent one, and it's mildly tempting with the EF-M mount (though the adapter is pretty effing expensive, and adds bulk/weight, which is counterproductive)...however...with the crappy AF and (more importantly for me), the HORRIBLE ergonomics (I want buttons, switches and dials for stuff!!! And make them user customizable, please! This thing has worse ergonomics in that respect than my S100!) will keep me from buying it.

I think most of his review is spot on but it will be interesting to know what settings he had on the camera that may have effected the AF.

Couldnt you make the counter argument that the primary market for this camera could be people who may NOT read the manual or anything and need a camera that is VERY easy to use?

That said I highly doubt it, The EOS M is not the type of camera I'd expect to have 5 menus of AF settings like a 7D or a 1-series... where you probubly dont want to try just picking it up and rushing out to shoot with it with only an hour to use it...

The problem with the EOS M is that it has a very serious price tag, but its lacking very serious features, Im talking simple things, like dual command dials and such for people who know what they're doing and need control over things... The IQ is great of course, But the Sony RX100 gives almost as good IQ and is less expensive last i checked... and if you're thinking of being more serious with a mirrorless Micro 4/3 or NEX have more comprehensive lens selections right now (And it will be 2 years until Canon matches it I'd expect)

it makes no sense to buy into an interchangable lens system that has a whopping 2 lenses to choose from right now..

This actually may turn out to be the reason some experienced EOS users actually buy the EOS M as opposed to other mirrorless cameras. Once they have the adaptor, they have all the lenses they need.

Not my idea of a small portable system. EOS-M is nice and portable...but the existing EF lenses are not...defeating the purpose of the portable system.

I agree. I don't see the purpose of investing in a compact system with the intention of having the camera constantly dangling off the end of an EF or EF-S lens. Having a compact system with a bunch of large glass, will require a larger bag and not save that much space compared to a DSLR. I'd imagine Canon envisioned the adapter for those situations when you can't cover the focal length an EOS-M lens. Early adopters don't have much choice right now, but as more lenses are released I expect this to be rare or at least Canon hopes it will be rare.

I agree with eastport... I'm getting the EOS-M because of my existing lens system.. Will I stick my 4002.8L on it ? (maybe for fun) but otherwise no. I just got it with the 18-55 zoom and thats it. I may add 1-2 more lens on it and call it quits. Hopefully the IQ will be good enough as to not having to lug my 1series on simple trips... this is what I am after.

So, to summarise.

Kai's review on the M agrees with most if not all amateur and pro reviewers - great IQ, crap AF. His test, although rushed, used his normal street photography routine, but the lack of results would indicate that there weren't too many that were viewable. He's a Leica guy, but I never find him to be anti Canon, Nikon or any other brand for that matter and he says he wanted the M to be great.

Kai's problem is that his style, humour, language etc are very British and that's not to everyone's taste, although very familiar to me as a Brit.

But we all watch him don't we, like him or not? Cos we wouldn't want to miss anything. So what he's achieved is lots of hits on YouTube and consequently, Digitalrev achieving high brand awareness - they must be in the top five best known photo dealers internationally and more accessible outside the US than the likes of B&H, Adorama, etc. Which is, I guess, what he's paid to do.

It's like someone once said about Mcdonalds. You might not like the taste, but you certainly know what you're gonna get...

well this is a canon forum, and canonites expect good reviews. Too bad, the camera had **** AF from the get go. You dont have to be a pro reviewer to realize this.

the ability to use your existing lens system is a gimmick. what good is it if it wont AF correctly anyhow? EOS-M = not this iteration, maybe EOS-M mark 2..... that's canon's style anyhow.
