Hi,
I am currently with zenfolio (basic package). I registered with them last year for one year. The feature that I use are protected galleries, the "not downloadable" option for the picture and the fact that the pictures won't be scan by bot and put on "google image search".

My zenfolio renewal is soon and I want to see my options. I currently rent my own web server. I was wondering if there is software that will have the options that I mentioned above. I would like the software to be cheap since I am not professional. My hosting service offers me some options (Gallery, Piwigo, Coopermine, zenphoto, Tiny web gallery, phpAlbum, PixelPost, 4images, Shutter, Plogger, Gallery 2), but they don't provide what I need.

What re my options?

Best regards,

if you went the WordPress route(since you already have a host), protecting your images is easy, a simple free plug in.

Great it seems to do what I asked:
Wordpress + WP Photo Album Plus + WP Content Copy Protection + Multiple Passwords for Protected Pages

Now, I forgot to mentioned, I also use the option to download full size images in zenfolio.

With WP Content Copy Protection, everything is protected. Is there a way to disable it for sub pages (protected with another password: managed by a different password)?

Best regards,

I just found out that you can easily go around the security in wordpress to prevent right-click and save images (the java scirpt).

It look like my Zenfolio is robust against that trick. Is there solid alternative in wordpress that would give me the same level of security as Zenfolio?

As long as browsers allow you to "View Source" (and there are other ways to do it as well without a browser), it's going to be impossible for web sites to 100% prevent right-click and save images.

What people could also do is take a screenshot of the browser and crop out the image if they really wanted to do it.

Zenfolio seems to use a javascript to display the image. Thus even with the source page, you don't have the url of the actual image.

I know that nothing is 100% certain (except tax and death), but I want it harder than a single click at the right place to steal the image.

Also, how private are password protected pages in wordpress. Is there a simple trick around that too?

Thanks?

I can tell you that with Firefox + Firebug as well as Chrome in developer mode, I can very easily find the URL of any image even if it's loaded by JS since it is a client-side technology.

I don't believe there is unless someone is knowledgeable enough to 1) brute force the password (or access to database/account/etc), 2) execute man-in-the-middle attacks, etc.

The javascript is simply calling a URL to display the image. It's trivial to display the URLs called by javascript -- browser plugins, wireshark, proxy logs, etc.

Javascripts and watermarks are good at preventing someone from "accidently" thinking that your image is free for them to use -- but they don't prevent someone who is intent on stealing your work. Your best bet at protection is to simply not make high-resolution images available publically.
