I have an 18-55mm IS II kit lens that's quite loud when focusing. I have 2 of them (2 cameras) and 1 is significantly louder than the other. Suggestions or ideas? Is there something that needs lubed (can you lube a lens?) or is something going south? It's my daughters camera, and I really can't replace the lens anytime soon.

When I did have a kit lens it was very loud focusing to.

Not every lens will be the same acoustically and optically, I wouldn't worry about.
Its only a Kit lens to.

Also to add, my 70-200 F4 lens was scary loud with the IS however its not as loud as before, probably because it has broken in more.

Nope. Kit lenses are just loud and slow. They use little electric motors on them rather than ultrasonic motors (USM). I'm sure it is fine. But even if there is something wrong, there is nothing on a lens you can lubricate. Any attempt to do so would be bad for the lens.

If one 18-55 IS kit lens is SIGNIFICANTLY louder than the other, then there must be some sort of a problem. It's not worth worrying about though because a used lens can be bought for $100 or less. Just keep using it and hope it doesn't fail completely. If it does fail, or you get tired of the noise, just buy another used one.

Rather than a problem, I wonder if there is a quality control issue and there are just individual differences between examples. That would also account for why some folks seems to have noisier IS on some lens models than others do. Or why some people have zoom creep and others don't on the same model lens, like the 15-85.
