I see than Canon Rumours are chatting about a possible IS version of the 24-70 f/2.8 L II.

If true then Canon and I are about to fall out big time. They need to be more forthcoming than they are. I'd love an IS version of this lens, thats not the issue. What gets me is that we should have been told up front so that sensible decisions could be made.

IF this is true, it'll probably be released at least a year after the 24-70II was released. IF that's also true, I see no problem with offering an upgraded version. Most companies are working on new versions of products (autos, computers, etc) when the current version is released... It's progress. Car companies constantly tweak features from year to year even right after a new model/version is released.

If everyone always waited on the new version, no one would ever own an iPhone.

If it is going to happen its far away, we have been waiting so long for the mk II. Canon would be shooting themselves in the foot if they release an IS version anytime soon.

You do know this is just a CR1, correct?

And they also offer IS and non-IS versions of the 70-200's... Why would the 24-70 be so upsetting with so many?

The only thing that sucks, as a current 24-70 II owner... In a year or whenever this IS version would come out, the price would drop quite a bit on the non-IS and the new IS version would be released at a price probably around the current model.

THAT is the bad part. I could have waited and got an IS version (If I knew for sure) later on.

This is from a new source, take this with a grain of salt. I’m intrigued as I do know the IS version exists.

I would be willing to bet if two or three people from this forum emailed them saying they had been shooting with a prototype 14-24, and that it is coming out next March, CR would post about it.

+1

Sometimes I feel like the CR guy just makes up stuff when it's a slow news day...

Exactly! I love how is rumor is blowing up all over camera forums now though and people are trying to stop others from buying the current version ;)

I love Canon Rumors though... But I really don't pay much attention to the CR1 stuff at all for anything more than entertainment. CR2 gets my attention and CR3 is usually on point.

But in all honestly, if the 24-70 II did come out I would expect IQ to be slightly less impressive as the current, non-IS version. Due to more elements inside the lens and all that. Now I know in the case of the 70-200 f/4 and the IS version of that lens, the IS version is noted to be sharper. However, the IS lens was released 7 years later. The 24-70 II's were developed at the same time with the same tech.

I am sure the IQ difference would be negligible though and most would pick IS over the sharper image. I have been fine without IS though honestly... Most of my stuff is moving when I shoot at such high ISO or I would just use a tripod and shoot at ISO 100... So in a way, I can deal without it and would most likely chose the non-IS version anyway if IQ was superior.

I am not surprised, what surprises me though is the high price of current MK II. I for one, would definitely appreciate the IS version over the non-IS even if it means comparatively reduced IQ.

The answer is yes, but the question is when?

Here we go again! This is just a rumor from yet another unknown source. I often wonder the intent of some of these.

for it to be a MK II they'd first have to come out with an original 24-70IS...so you've got at least a few years :)

well now it's a CR3...but there's been a slight change:

and seems to fit in with canon's last offerings in my mind...aka...not making much sense...

Maybe they'll have 4 different versions of the 24-70, much like the 70-200.
