just but the 5d3 use it for a bit and if you dont like it, sell it, take the small loss and know you have the right camera.
its probably cheaper and easier than swapping then finding out it was a mistake.

You know there is a risk with everything.. First - the grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side- no matter which side you currently are on.

The second risk is that you might end up with both a Canon camera and a Nikon one.

But- if I wanted to try- I'm about 99.9999% sure this is the tact that I would take.

So I love everything about the dynamic range and workability of the D800, but I'm starting to think it may be a bit more than I need for what I do. I do a lot of street photography, some landscapes, portraits, and candids. I feel like the D800 isn't a great "do everything" kind of camera. I also miss the ergonomics of Canon. I've gotten used to the D800, but I picked up a 5DIII the other day and it felt better for sure. I've got a potential trade in the works, but I'm not sure if I should do it or not. I'm not heavily invested in Nikon glass, so that isn't a big deal. I just don't want to make the switch and regret it. So I guess my question would be, is the 5DIII going to be a better all around camera? Or do I just stick with what I've got and add lenses and be happy?

I shoot events and family portraits. With the need to change AF point a lot of the time, the advantage of two extra stops over the 5D2 and 1 ahead of the 1D4 and making good use of the silent shooting mode, I find myself using my 5D3 more than my much-loved 1D4 and with the benefit of FF. While I haven't tried a D800 I dare say that for the purposes you mentioned, I would be more than comfortable to recommend the 5D3. It may not be built like a 1D nor to the pro camera's tighter tolerances but it's my first go-to body unless of course it's raining cats and dogs or if I have to shoot sport though in respect of the latter, 6fps is no slouch.

IMHO, I don't think you'll regret the move.

Happy shooting whichever way you decide to go.

You could do what I did

>Buy 5D
>Already have large assortment of pro manual focus Nikkor glass
>Buy Nikon-EOS adapter
>Swap focus screen from a Nikon FE
>??????
>profit

best of both worlds

I started with Nikon and switched to Canon in the 1D Mark II era. The reason I switched was that Canon was killing Nikon in high ISO, and the selection of primes for sports was better. I never regretted the switch, but I to date I've never been happy with Canon's autofocus compared to my old trusty Nikon D2H. Now, I just ordered a 5DMIII last night, and from everything I've read I believe this will make me happy in the AF department... it sports the same AF engine as the 1DX. I shoot sports, so we may have different needs there. I couldn't justify the 1DX at this point, and I chose the 5DMIII over a used 1DM4 which runs about the same used. I'm saying all this to say that the one thing I have missed from Nikon I believe the 5DMIII has nailed... so switch and don't look back.

If you have been switching back and forth already.... What makes you think you will ever be happy ? What led you to Nikon anyway?

I'm staying with the D800. I just had a bad case of G.A.S. the other day.

At least with the 5d MK III you'll get more shots that are in focus then the D600 - D800

GOod to hear you came to your senses! You already figured out that switching teams didn't really didn't change your photography, so why would you go through that hassle again!

I think the D800 has changed my photography actually. It's made me have to be more sound in my technique, and it has really changed my editing. In able to do a lot more with my D800 files than I could with my 5D2 files. Ergonomics definitely would've been a silly reason to switch back.

I love the image quality of the Nikon D800... was considering switching but after holding the D800 in my hand and shooting with it for an hour or so, it just didn't feel confortable. Biggest issue for me was the front dial on the hand grip. Right next to the middle finger, you almost need to be doubled-jointed with your index finger to rotate it. Also the menu system is crazy. I guess I could get used to the menu but it's not intuitive by a long-shoot.

There's a number of times I thought of adding(not switching) Nikon to my gear just for the experience. I've got good friends who make great shots with their Nikon gear.

In the end just too expensive and unfortunately not practical for me as a Canon shooter.

So what took you to the 'dark side'(btw Nikon has nice optics...nothing dark side about it :) ) in the first place?

:)

Being underwhelmed with the sensor technology of the 5D3. I felt like it was a marginal upgrade from the 5D2 in most areas, with the exception of AF of course. The D800 sensor runs laps around the 5D3 at low ISO, which is largely where I shoot.

Underwhelmed? With the sensor technology of the 5D3? Have you shot both Canon and Nikon?...I have when a good friend loaned me a Nikon.
