On this lens of mine the filter threads start deeper down rather than almost at the very edge of the front ring (minus a slight bevel), as they do on every other Canon lens I own. Looking with a magnifier, I can tell that the threads are not stripped or defective in any way, the ring just seems to be so manufactured.

The cosequence is that filters and other accesories that screw onto the lens obtain less grip, mostly from less than one threading turn before they seat. I'm uncomfortable with this, especially when using my third party ring flash.

I would like to know if this is what other people got as well, to decide whether to have the filter holding ring replaced under warranty or not to bother just to end up with another like the one I already have.

Mine is the same (a 2009 lens) and I've never had a problem with it holding the MT-24.

Thank you Bob.

That's interesting. I've always thought that both Canon macro flashlights mount to Canon macro lenses by gripping the lens' exterior, without screwing into the filter ring.

Obviously, I own neither one.

For the 100 L, the macro flashes grip onto a 67mm adapter which in turn screws into the filter ring.

Canon 7D w/grip, Canon SX30 IS (modified for IR), Rokinon 14mm, Canon 24-105 L IS, Sigma 50mm, Canon 70-200 F/2.8 L IS II, Canon 100mm L IS, Kenko 1.4x Pro DG, Canon 2x II extender, Yongnuo YN-565EX, Induro CT414 with Induro BHL-3 and GHB-A

That's the case for the 100/2.8, MP-E65 and 50/2.5 but the 100/2.8L and 180/3.5 need an adapter which is screwed into the filter thread (67mm or 72mm).
As below

I see. I'm wondering if Canon opted for a deeper than usual bevel on this front ring so as to assure stronger coupling to their dedicated flash adapter?

Anyone using the new Hoya HD Protector on this lens?
