Well thanks to ML for my 50D and a short class I took on the subject of short movies I really want to get into some short videography which could lead to some financial gain for me as an added bonus.
Generally I want to do short interview/story video clips and dont want to buy the best but also dont want to upgrade in a month eithor.
I was recommended the H4n but have also seen the dr 100 II for just a bit more. In any case I would like to stay in this price range.
Also for lav mics I read that audio is more important than the video part and I should get a good pair of mics. Ive seen the Shure SM-93 recommended but like I said earlier any recommendations are welcome.

The DR-100 has been discontinued and replaced by the DR-40 which for $200 is in my opinion a better deal than H4N.

Also for lav mics I read that audio is more important than the video part and I should get a good pair of mics.

In many productions video is the eye-candy of the story while the audio speaks the story and nothing will cause a viewer to click-off a video faster then piss-poor audio.

Think audio is not important, ask your self this, how many times have you walked away from the set out of sight of the screen but continued to listen to the program?

Ive seen the Shure SM-93 recommended but like I said earlier any recommendations are welcome.

Personally the SM-93 is my go-to lav it provides great audio is quite rugged and easy on the budget.

I think you will find that while the DR 40 offers exceptional value for money the DR 100 Mk II is still part of the Tascam product line. In addition to all of the features of the DR 40 it also has digital input an separate line and headphone outs, rechargeable battery pack and a remote control. Whether you feel the extra facilities are worth the money is up to you.

If the H4N and DR 100 Mk II are the direct competitors this does make the DR 40 exceptional value for money considering it is loaded with the main features of use for video recording. Separate line out and headphone jacks are a significant advantage if you are going to feed the recorder into the camera as well though.

Thats good information, I was going to replace a missing DR-100 but was misinformed by a rep that the DR-100 had been replaced by the DR-40 which now I know is not so.

Are you talking about DR-100 or DR-100 MKII? I don't know about the 100 but I just got the 100 MKII. Love this unit!

My intent is to replace a missing DR-100, one of my guys left it laying somewhere at an event and it was either forgotton about or grew legs.

I swear if this stuff keeps up (gear going south) I going to set up a payroll deduction program and see how that flys, so far in the third quarter we have lost a DR-100, a couple of 12 gauge 100 foot stingers and a case of 63 minute Mini-DV tapes.
