The 24-70 I was about $1400 seven years ago when I bought mine and I think right up until the Mark II was first available. The Mark II is $2300 now and 24-70 Mark I prices went up as a result (thus the flawed logic in comparing current pricing). They didn't give us IS but still tacked on about a grand. Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here

I have the 24-70 II on my to buy list, but its very difficult to justify such a lens at this cost, especially when the Nikon camp has an amazing 24-70G of their own for about $1100 cheaper.
