I was once again out shooting trains, when this beautiful bird all but posed for me over the field next to the tracks. I could have used some extra reach on a few of them, but the 100-400 proved able to get some good shots. It was just before dusk when they come out to hunt I guess. I love the red eyes these birds have.

Picking a spot

Full hover mode, looking for movement below (or what I like to call the "album cover" pose).

In for the kill

It disappeared into tall grass, then took off away from me with whatever was it's dinner to go eat in a tree at the opposite side of the field. I will have to bring some bigger artillery to this spot next weekend

Lovely images or a fine looking bird, with the third image, for me, being the stand out of a great set (the pose, lighting, the composition all top notch). Very nicely captured.

All nice, but #3 is stunning. The last one is interesting - I've only seen them in open fields.

Thanks guys, #3 is definitely the standout, and the one I will probably print. The last shot may be a bit of an illusion. The house is actually about 50 or 60 feet behind the bird, which is in fact diving into an open field. The 400mm focal length is compressing the distance and making the house appear much closer than it is.

They are such cool looking birds. I do not see enough of them. Great shots with a tough bird to get close to.
