When i got this setup i never thought about using it outdoors.. mainly got it because i liked the IQ / focal length.. and the high ISO capabilities of the camera along with its quick focus... but my question is:

Is this setup actually "Water proof" like they claim to be?

Can I shoot with this setup out in light to moderate rain without any water getting inside the camera & lens?

I don't use any filters, its just a hood attached all the time.. and I have the BG-E11 grip on the body.

Also, can this setup be taken under water? (i know this is sounding a bit stupid now lol) but how far bellow (for example 1m) has anyone tried taking this setup... if it indeed is water proof?

I would assume the 70-200 sealing is some of the best. I would not worry about the lens at all.

The body on the other hand is not as robust as the 1D series, but it is pretty damn good. I 'tested' mine last weekend at the halloween event at the Cleveland Zoo... There was water pouring off my 5D3 and 24-70 II... It was nearly a steady downpour outside. I tried to shield it best I could but there was no hope keeping the rain off. I never exposed my gear to such rain before and was quite worried... I know the 5D3 is sealed, but I know it is not 1D type sealing.

It worked perfectly fine all night and they next day :D Just be smart about it... It is not fully sealed but is quite resistant.

And you don't need a filter for either the 70-200 II or the new 24-70 II to complete sealing (confirmed with Canon directly on the 24-70 II)... But I personally use filters so I can carelessly clean when need be and all that, especially in rain and other weather conditions.

It's not even close to waterproof. Dunk it below the water and you're going to kill it. They make underwater housings for them, but not sure about for the 70-200 lens with it.

Weather sealed or weather resistant it's not the same as water proof.

You can shoot under some heavy rain i suppose (think there's a DigitalRev video where he shoots in a monsoon) but in no way i would dunk it unless with some sort of housing.

They make underwater housings for all the 1D bodies too...

The 70-200 II is a weather sealed lens however the 5D3 is not fully weather sealed. I would say it is weather resistant appose to waterproof.

I personally wouldn't dunk my 70-200 II and 1D4 into a bucked of water just to find out... but that's just me.

If I am in a bind and I'll usually just put a plastic bag over the body and rubber band it to the lens. It is not 100% but it helps. I've done this method several times during sporting events and my 5D2 is still going strong.

I agree but in the right combination they come close...

This is not the 70-200 II but it does give an example.

"Weather & Environmental Sealing
The top picture shows I got the lens completely soaked. There was water dripping off of it. I did this 3-4 times during the trip just to make sure it would continue to work. It did.

Another issue with photo safari’s is dust, there’s a lot of it during dry times. Every single day we had a coating of dust on all our gear. I purposely left the 70-300 out of the bag and let it become a nice bed for dust. The zoom and focusing rings remained smooth and grit free. After 2 weeks of abuse, no dust appeared inside the lens. It’s safe to say this lens is sealed as well as any zoom out there."

Canon cameras and lenses with weather sealing are designed to survive rain. They won't submerge under water - that is a whole different set of circumstances as you have the water pressure pushing constantly against the camera and lens and it will force it's way in. Falling rain has very little in the way of pressure behind it.

Like others said, the 5D3 is not quite up to the sealing of a 1D X, but it should survive some rain as long as you are careful.

Just had mine out hiking in a downpour with my 70-200 and 24-105. Completely drenched for hours with a slight reprieve while I moved locations (hence the lens change). Didn't miss a beat.
