I am thinking about purchasing the 5D3 which is currently on sale. Should I buy with the 24-105 with it ? With the lenses I currently have I will have a gap from 40mm to 70mm on the ff. Is there something else you would by instead? I enjoy shooting landscape and nature. My flicker page will gave you some examples. The 24-105 seems like a good walking around lens.

On a full frame camera the 24-105 is a damn near perfect complementary walkaround lens. Its wide enough for architectural/landscap stuff and long enough to do detail shots. It essentially will replace the function that your 17-55 provides on the crop body. Its not 2.8, but its sharp and the better iso performance and DOF control of the FF body will pretty much cover that. Plus if you buy the kit and dont love it, the discount you got for the kit will allow you to flip the lens at a profit.

You'd want something like the 24-105 or 24-70L to replace your 17-55. The 17-40 will be your new 10-22 for FF. You already have the 70-200L, so with one of those standard 24-xx zooms you should be covered for FF.

the 24-105 is a good walking around outdoors lens. Inside, it's not my favorite. I've had it 3 times, and sold it 3 times.

Although, if landscape and nature are the main things you shoot, you may want to look at the 5D2... it doesn't seem like you need the amazing AF capabilities of the 5D3.

Another vote for the 24-105. From your description it would fit your needs well.

I got the 24-105 when i got my 5DMKIII but after seeing a mates new Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC im getting rid of my 24-105L

The 24-105 is a good, not great lens (IMO) but after having a 17-55IS f/2.8 for almost 5 years on my crop camera's i think the Tamron is closer than the Canon.
I also have had 3 copies of the 24-105 over the years and sold them as i found other lenses to be better. My third is the first on a FF camera but im still a bit under whelmed with it, especially compared to the Tamron and my primes (all non L)

The 24-105L is a perfect walk around lens for me on FF, and it's price as part of the 5D3 kit makes it an attractive buy.

Looking at your current lens collection, the answer to the following question will probably tell you if you need a lens in this range:

If you only had your EFS 10-22 for your 60D (i.e. no EFS 17-55 or 17-40L), would you be able to cover your shooting needs now?

Buy it with the lens. If you later decide to sell it, you won't lose any money.

24-105 is a decent general purpose lens, but it has very bad distortion at 24mm. If I had both lenses with me, there isn't a single time that I would choose the 24-105 over the 17-40 to shoot in the 24-35mm range.

Keep the 17-40 to replace your 10-22. Don't bother with a replacement for the 17-55 for now. For nature and landscape shots, that 40-70mm gap could very well be in the least used range, and I don't think you'll miss it.

24mm is wide enough on FF for most of my shooting. I sold my 7d and a tokina 12-24 and haven't looked back. My 24-70 works great on FF. I would pick up a 24-105 and see if you need to go wider than 24mm
