We have a winner! Now... how do I tell my wife that?

Tell her my family real life story.
My wife was using film Rebel300 in Auto modes always. No problem, excellent kids portraits.
In 2009 we decided to switch to digital Rebel. Total disaster in auto modes for her, for me and for my daugher (with our Rebel and new one for kid, who takes films with it in 99.99%). Including P mode.
As result, my wife still using our old DSLR like andanced P&S FujiFilm camera. It takes pictures what she needs in auto modes, while digital Rebel doesn't.

If auto modes are the only choice for her - Nikon DSLRs are preferable.
They were designed to be usable in Auto modes, while with Canon DSLRs it seems like it was just added to be here without testing with real users.

Urban Dictionary is truly an accredited source. Thanks. Anyway, it is blocked at work. However, #2 is close enough. My "pfft" was used to look down upon the P setting and to all those who use it.

Hmm... I have to take that back. My wife would kill me. Plus, I have found myself on P mode when struggling with ambient lighting.

pretty sure all you had to do is select "P" on your camera and take a picture of the computer screen to get your answer! You did not need to spray lemon juice!

just sayin...

Program mode on the 1 series is actually pretty good. I use it every new and again.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

I wonder if your lab of choice was correcting her snaps and you were oblivious.

Just for accuracy's sake, "P" stands for Program AE, the successor to an auto exposure mode that was introduced on the Canon A-series FD-mount 35mm cameras in the early 1980's. The adjustable Program AE was one of the most sophisticated auto exposure systems of its time, and gave Canon a technical advantage in the consumer 35mm SLR market that lasted all of four years. Then, Minolta drove the state of the art even further with the auto exposure and autofocus Maxxum cameras a few years later. (Canon was essentially forced to drop the manual-focus FD cameras and move on to the EF and EOS system to stay competitive.)
