I've been using a few generic branded flashes for off camera work but need something for on camera use for an upcoming wedding that has a bit more power. My budget is tight and these are pretty cheap on ebay at under £100, but reviews are a bit hit or miss. Other options are Nissin 622 or Metz 50 AF-1 but they are more expensive.

Experiences and opinions please. Would you have one as your only flash over the others mentioned? Maybe even 2 of them with one as a backup?

I only have 1 565EX at the moment. So, it's my only on-camera flash - if I really need one on my camera. I also have a 400ws strobe, but that's a different story. I used the 565EX on-camera for a few times just to fool around with ettl settings, and to obviously test it out. It worked perfectly fine. However, since I got my radio triggers in, I've never used it on-camera - which was my goal to begin with. Also, the 400ws strobe that I have has a LI-ION battery pack that I sometimes use on my 565EX (with power cable of course). Works like a charm. I bought mine from ebay from thephotogadget I believe it was.

I bought one around 9 months ago as a backup to my 580EX ii. ETTL exposure was never quite right. 100 or so pops and it was DOA. Sent it back to Hong Kong and I am still waiting for repair or replacement. Product is crap. Service is worse.

I have seven 'camera-top' style flashguns from Metz (4), Canon (1) and Yongnuo (2). The ones I reach for first are invariably the YN-565EX models - in fact I lent out my Canon 580EXII long term and don't miss it at all. Perfectly happy with the YN-565EX although early models did have (well documented) capacitor problems but the post-May 2012 versions seem perfectly reliable within normal parameters. Suppliers with high turnover (HKYongnuo (external link) and ThePhotoGadget (external link)) are proving reliable from reports here and elsewhere.

If you want to buy from a UK eBay supplier, read ALL the information provided on the listing. I strongly suspect that some of them are not quite as they superficially may appear to be (ie not actually UK based at all).

Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!
