I have not used the 300mm prime. In my experience the 70-300L is very sharp, so I guess sharpness should not be the main point to separate the 2 lenses. The 300L has a 1 stop advantage on the long end, while the 70-300L has newer IS and weather sealing, and offers more flexibility in terms of FL.

Thanks sebr :)
i saw some photos at the net useing the prime 300L with canon extender x1.4
i think they can shoot at f/5.6 at 420mm
but when i use the kenko pro 300 DGX with the zoom
it will become at f/8
that why i ask about the sharpness

sharpness will be comparable probably, but at 420 the 70-300 is going to be slow

If what you really want is more reach, why not add the 400 5.6L? I have that combo and it works great for me. Depends what you want to shoot though?

I can't speak for the 70-300, but i love my 300 f/4. Super sharp, not nearly as heavy as it looks.. great lens.

I can't tell any difference in sharpness between the two.
