Ugh!

So it would seem that Canon is putting their foot down with dealers offering lower prices. B&H has already responded with raising the price of the 5D mark III back up to over 3k including the $200 rebate... Looks like I'll just hold onto my 5D2 a lot longer.

"Canon is starting the enforcement of their MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) pricing rules today. Some camera bodies and lenses will see an immediate increase in their base price..."

Nice way to further cripple their DSLR sales...

I hope Digitalrev et al aren't hit too badly...

They are just living up to their new slogan. "Canon - not delighting you anymore."

I am interested in seeing what their profit margins are gonna be for the 4Q now.

I had a feeling that at under 3k the 5D3's would start selling a bit more but with this now I am interested to see what happens. I was considering getting one to replace my 5D3 when I got back form business but now... I dunno. I personally don't think the 5D3 is worth 3.5k. I rather just save up another 3k and get the 1Dx... exp considering the firmware for the 5D3 isn't going to be out till April 2013..??.. Then again it'll be interesting to see the price of them then. Who knows... Only time will tell but till then, I'll just keep clicking on what I got's!

Also, it will significantly hurt B&H, Adorama and other North American resellers, who will lose out to resellers based in other countries where MAPs are illegal.

Although there are still discounts going on the prices are actually higher than they were yesterday. Yesterday B&H has the 5D3 body only for under 3,000 USD and today with the same 200 USD discount is is back over at 3,299 USD a 400 USD price increase to what was shown yesterday.

What is happening it seems is that Canon is forcing retailers to quit adding their own additional discount to help sell cameras in this hard economic time.

I cannot make any sense out of this decision. Where do the Canon execs that decided this policy live ? Do they ever visit planet earth that is undergoing a worldwide recession with disposable income shrinking for 90% of the population ? Well it seems a lot of us are going to keep our equipment for longer that expected.

Their sales have been down, so they're response is to keep their prices high? Whether or not it's fair to consumers is one thing, but that policy doesn't seem like it's in Canon's best interest. Higher priced products will sell less; particularly when the competition has similar or better products for a lower price (5D III vs D800 or 6D vs D600).

Funny, just the other day, I finally decided that I was going to get a 5dmk3 over the D600.

but now with this recent news? Nope.

I certainly won't be buying at this price point, the market will determine how long Canon sticks to their MAP pricing. I'm not worried at all. I still say, this will be a very short product cycle for the 5D, just not enough of an upgrade to drive sales, especially at that price.

I would imagine with this policy in place, MAP will have to drop on the 5DIII very soon. There were far too many deals on this camera over the past month or so, and I can't imagine people deciding to spend $3500 on one now given what they were.

Hey guys, just go on the B&H store, and look under the D800 and the 5D mkIII and you will noticed their is twice the amount of reviews with the canon, so Canon are not really scared of the competition, they make a lot of money, believe me

Their profits are down 40%...I think they're probably nervous about that. Any company would be sweating about that much decline in profits.

There also seems to be ten times as much advertising for Canon cameras as compared to advertising for Nikon cameras, to say nothing of the ubiquitous Canon labels for non-photographic equipment seen in advertisements and offices everywhere. Surely this marketing presence has to have a significant effect.
