I have managed to shoehorn......no wait......drop in a Nikon FE focusing screen into my 5D Classic with no modification, AND manual focusing is spot on. I've been testing it with pre-AI Nikkor lenses on a Fotodiox black Nikon-EOS adapter and so far the results have been nothing short of owning a 12.1 megapixel Nikon FE.

The viewfinder is plenty bright and actually brighter than the Ee-S screen which was made for the 5Dc for manual focusing.

Lenses I have tested so far have been

50 f1.4 Nikkor-S
55 f3.5 Micro-Nikkor macro
105 f2.5 Nikkor-P
300 f4.5 Nikkor-H

I'll get some proper ISO 100 samples up later today, but us 5Dc guys finally have a split-image focus screen that isn't some ****ty Chinese version that doesn't meter correctly. :D

Maybe I'll move on to this in the future, but at the moment I'm not really sure what it is all about. Now I got a 5D II for making videos and I could use some help with focusing, doh..

So your metering is spot-on?

It's close, I seem to get best results with the Ee-S

Interesting. Any pictures comparing the sizes of the screens? This could turn out to be the perfect solution if the metering isn't too far off. I have the EE-S screen but it's no replacement for a split-prism screen.

Nice...how close is metering?

How does it work with non-Nikon lenses?
How's AF?

UPDATE:

Tried an FD system with adapter.....focus is spot on. So with Nikon N/AI and AI/AI-s focusing is accurate. The next one I will try is T-mount M42, which is a pretty popular lens mount. So far so good.

Metering is not bad with the screen, I found myself underexposing many of my shots 1 stop and at ISO 100 I still have room to push or pull it in LR3.2. Most situations work well with the Ee-S metering setting in the C.Fn. The brighter the scene the more I underexposed. It's a different beast but I'm learning to tame it.

Have not tried AF Nikkors yet, those will be next.

The screens are exactly the same size, tomorrow I will post a comparison with all three, but they are exactly the same. On the subject of size, if you set the camera down hard enough the screen pops out, I set it down on the ground hard at the Shuttle rollover and it popped out, but I was able to easily get it in.

nope, no need to change. Focusing screens affect the viewfinder and metering.

I've been using my AF lenses just fine.
