Congratulations on the new equipment, it will make a huge difference in your flash photography as you've already seen. John has the next solution with a bounce card banded to the head and a 45 degree tilt rather than straight up. It creates wonderful light shadows that help define the faces.

How about aiming the 580 "directly" at you and comparing it to the onboard flash? Because I'm sure if the onboard flash could rotate it would also produce a (happier) better shot as well.

But it can't so what's the point?

If the reason the 580 looks better is becuase it can do something the onboard can't.. why then not use that ability?

I rigged up a flash card that's large and obvious yet very effective:

Sample shots:

It's made of 2 sheets of 110lb paper with household aluminum foil sandwiched in between. The belt is made of a cardboard mailer stripped down to size. The card is hot glued to the belt for security and stiffness. I've since added a long piece of thin white shim to the back to give it a spine so it won't flop back and forth and degrade the small neck (not shown).

The 580 is an awesome tool,. I've yet to be let down by it..
It has the built in catchlight "business card" for use when bouncing..

Also,. at times you want a softer look,. flip the "ultra wide" panel over the flash.. it works like a diffuser.. (mind you not the best but in a pinch)

Love the shot of your kid with his new toys. That thing works! I'm curious why you chose to mount it on the short edge of the flash head instead of the way I did mine. It gets great results, so I'm curious as to your thinking.

Thanks.

Yes! What?!?!
Did you have your coffee yet? ;)

Do you need me to clarify my point more? Or does anyone really care?
I just would also like to see a more "oranges to oranges" comparison.

There's no technical reason for it...it just lets me switch between portrait and landscape modes quickly and easily. It's already sideways so I press the button and flip it. And the card stays in a good position all the time with no need to spin it or mess with it once its on.

The point is there is no point in comparing direct flash with direct flash. You don't typically buy an external flash just so you have something bigger to aim directly. You buy it so you can bounce it and alter & therefore improve the results.

Now that is brilliant in it's simplicity! I never would have thought of that. Thanks!

But what is the point of testing the onboard flash against a 580 if You do not use the capabilities the 580 has? If You don't use the capabilities the 580 have then why even bother to buy it?

I always use the wide angle deflector if I'm bouncing it, with an index card attached. My theory is, 1) It will direct more light onto the card, which in turn will provide more direct illumination, and 2) it will light up a larger area of the ceiling, providing a softer, more natural look.

Does my theory hold water, or am I all wet?

(By the way, the girl in those shots is really cute.)

I would do that with my Lightsphere. Dunno if the same would hold true for a bounce card. I imagine it would.

Higher guide number? That's all I can come up with. Just better coverage.

I can't remember the last time I used a direct flash. For me, it's usually useless.
