John has the next solution with a bounce card banded to the head and a 45 degree tilt rather than straight up. It creates wonderful light shadows that help define the faces. Dave

Sample shots:
It's made of 2 sheets of 110lb paper with household aluminum foil sandwiched in between. The belt is made of a cardboard mailer stripped down to size. The card is hot glued to the belt for security and stiffness. I've since added a long piece of thin white shim to the back to give it a spine so it won't flop back and forth and degrade the small neck (not shown). Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? If the reason the 580 looks better is becuase it can do something the onboard can't.. why then not use that ability? Yes! What?!?! I'm curious why you chose to mount it on the short edge of the flash head instead of the way I did mine. It gets great results, so I'm curious as to your thinking. Thanks. John There's no technical reason for it...it just lets me switch between portrait and landscape modes quickly and easily. It's already sideways so I press the button and flip it. And the card stays in a good position all the time with no need to spin it or mess with it once its on. Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here

Or does anyone really care? I just would also like to see a more "oranges to oranges" comparison. The point is there is no point in comparing direct flash with direct flash. You don't typically buy an external flash just so you have something bigger to aim directly. You buy it so you can bounce it and alter & therefore improve the results. Now that is brilliant in it's simplicity! I never would have thought of that. Thanks!

If You don't use the capabilities the 580 have then why even bother to buy it? EDITING OF MY PHOTOS IS NOT ALLOWED

I always use the wide angle deflector if I'm bouncing it, with an index card attached. My theory is, 1) It will direct more light onto the card, which in turn will provide more direct illumination, and 2) it will light up a larger area of the ceiling, providing a softer, more natural look.
