What are they made of?

You'll need a really strong detergent, lots of dish washing liquid or laundry powder will do it.

If they have fine details you can't get a brush or cloth into, then buy some engine degreaser from your automotive parts store. Look for something ok to use on rubber parts (most are quite gentle).
This will dissolve the oil and allow it be rinsed of with water. Will be safe on metal and plastic.

Don't use brake cleaner, or carb cleaner etc, these are highly toxic and contain strong solvents. They are basically extra strength paint stripper and are usually acidic as well.

So long and thanks for all the flash

Lots of dishwashing liquid should be fine then :)

Remember to wear some old clothes and rubber gloves would be useful as well, only because it helps stop transfer onto other things (like cameras.....)

Use Dawn. It is what they use on highways, waterways, and wildlife.

Black paint will work just fine, add water to get desired texture. It also won't be toxic so when you dispose of it you won't have to worry about it going into groundwater or the ocean.
