Pick: 35L and 50 1.4, or 50L and 35 f2?

I'm going to try and replace my 24-70 with a 35 and a 50, the question is which kit? I carry a 5d3 and a 1d4 so take into factor I can have a few different crops.

I think i'm leaning toward the 35L just because of the focal range feels more of a difference than the 85L. If it was something that COULD be taken with the 50, i'd be reaching for the 85.

Does anyone how both and can talk about their likes / dislikes? Which one can focus closer? Would anyone agree that the quality between the 35 f2 and 35L is GREATER than the 50 1.4 and the 50L?

my 2nd shoots with a 35L and it's NASTY. this was with a 5d2 and at f1.4

and this is with the 35mm f2 @ f2 (ignore the stupid shot, it's just a test. i have other shots with the 35 f2 but none at f2 so not really a fair test.)

and with the 50mm f1.4. I think i had mine micro adjusted to be sharper, but i felt like f1.4 was difficult to work with at times. (both shots at f1.4)

i don't have a 50L so if anyone could post sample shots at f1.2 that'd be rad.

ok guru's, ready, set, HELP!

Dan, I am not sure if I could help on your decision. I just wanted to share with you my experience. I have 35L and 50 1.4 with 5D3 and 1D3 (similar to yours setup). I started using 35L this summer (sold my 24-70, it is too heavy for me and a little bit boring images from it). I like 35L very much. I tried putting 35L on my 5D3 and 50 1.4 on my 1D3. it worked well. I used to use mid-range zoom (24-70 and 24-105), so this setup took me a while to get used to. I do sometimes missed the zoom but I am very happy with the images came from these two lenses. Both are 1.4 and together they cost less than the new 24-70 2.8 II.

They are too close. Get a 35L and a 85 1.8. They complement each other better than a 35 and 50.

24-50-85 for me. I owned the 35L a few times. It's a great lens, but I wasn't all that crazy about the focal length.

As for the 50L, know what you are getting yourself into. It's a finicky lens!

It sounds like you have the 85 already? I would go with the 35 - I love that lens.

Bryan, just got the 85L, current setup is

17-35 f2.8L
50 1.8 (used as a backup for video, sold the 1.4 earlier this year due to lack of use)
24-70L (which will be going up for sale)
85L
100L
135L (which may be going up for sale now that the 85L is here)
70-200 v2

I'm wondering if the 35L on the 1d4 and the 85L on the 5d3 would be a good combo, and if i needed wider or more reach, i'd just swap em out.

My setup is often:

35L, 50L, 24-105, 70-200v2. I just bought a Rokinon 14mm which I have been liking, but rarely use the 100 macro, and sold my 135 due to lack of use.

Nobody can tell you what to get. It all depends on your shooting style. I've been through numerous 35mm lenses and could never get the true handle on using it. Never liked it. Not truly wide enough for epic environmental shots, but too wide for any kind of closer range portraiture. I've had the 35L, 35 f/2, and Nikkor 35 F/2. The f/2 35mm lenses were probably my favourite, as they have the unique property of a very close MFD which allowed for some really creative close up and detail shots.

I've ended up with a 50/85 combo grouped with an UWA lens and like it much. I never understood how people could say the 50 and 85 are too similar. They are SO different. Much like a 35 and 50 are. It all depends on your style.

well the 35L is on it's way, and a sigma 50mm f1.4 is on it's way as well. Hopefully the sigma will suffice and I won't get the L bug!

I really like my 35L on my 5D2. Its very sharp wide open and the minimum focus distance is great. I'm sure you will love it.
