Using a 2x converter in general will cost you quality. I don't believe anyone's ever done a lens-by-lens study that "with a 2x TC on lens A, you'll lose 19.5% IQ while with lens B, you'll lose 21.3". Among other things, the comparison would have to be able to adjust for different performance by the unconverted lenses. The closest you'll find is in Canon's EF Lenswork book, which has MTF tests for all the (then) current lenses, and includes results with TC for those that do support the Canon TCs.

Thanks Jon, I will have to see if I can get a copy or find the MTF test results online.

My Sigma 120-300 works just amazing with a 1.4 tc. The 2x TC works nice too, but you need to be at between f/8-f/11 for best results. The 1.4 works great at any apeture.

I have been doing extensive testing of all of my lenses. The Sigma at 300, compared to my Canon 300/4 L IS : no difference in general. The Canon is better for macro. Using TC's: the Sigma produced better results than the Canon by a bit. 2X is ok if you stop the lens down some.
