Which one of the versions will be problem free for a 7D? I know the 1 gives some errors from time to time and will need rechipping...
How does V2 work on the 7D? any issues?

Either of them work fine. The II version was made mainly to give Nikon users an in-lens motor (the original used the body's screw-drive), so it's a bit of a pointless update in Canonland. Tokina says the second version has 'improved coatings', but that's most likely marketing hype. Save some cash and get the first version; neither needs re-chipping, and I've used mine on a 7D several times without issue.

hmmm I was under the impression the V1 had some compatibillity issues with 7D, some owners had issues with focus on f4 above 16mm

My understanding is that both the 11-16 II and the 12-24 II got the improved coatings which reduce flair considerably.

12-24 II is poor on sun flare. Otherwise excellent lens. Due good zoom range it is excellent outdoor walk around lens. 11-16 will be good for indoor as is one stop faster.

I have had no issues of compatibility between my Tokina 12-24mm f/4 Mk-I and my 7D...

I used this on a 500D with absolutely no problems. One of the best lenses I ever had when I was getting into the game.
