I can never get close enough even with my 300mm zoom to get such a shot with a great blue - it seems like they take off at the slightest disturbance. Or you are far stealthier than I have managed to be. Sam

I was walking along a spillway, and it happened to fly up past me without me even realizing it had been down in the water. I fired away as fast as I could before it was too far gone. The AF locked on incredibly fast, which certainly helped with the result. Typically, I do need the 2x to get close enough for a good shot of these birds, but it slows the AF quite a bit, so in-flight shots become a challenge. SkyBaby wrote in post #15208005 Tack sharp.
