I know we've heard for quite some time now that there will be new forum software. Is there a time frame? Again, I'm not trying to rock the boat, was just wondering. I know it has to be a massive undertaking and I certainly appreciate Pekka and the mods/admins for all their hard work.

The time frame is when it's right and when it's ready. Anyone who's found themselves beta testing software that they actually paid for should appreciate this. You won't be involuntary beta testers for the next generation of POTN.

I like the software as it is. Nothing wrong with it. FM on the other hand is like an antique site.

Yes there is a timeframe, it is revealed when it is done :)

Seriously, the dev software is running great and I'm working really hard to finish it. My work prevents me to code it all the time, and this has delayed it considerably. I have and mean to do it as "no compromises" in features, speed and usability. It started almost 4 years ago from a blank page and at this stage I'm really eager to show the results.

I think I'll start a thread soon with some demo flash movies.... I could also start sharing screenshots and explain what it is all about.

Whatever the coding is, I just hope it doesn't stray to much from how the current forum looks and feels. I was a member of another forum that upgraded their site and they virtually killed off the membership overnight. A once thriving community now looks like a barren wasteland over there. Now instead of an average posting receiving 10 to 20 replies, the majority of posts don't even get 1 reply.
As of right now I am in no hurry and trust Pekka is thinking this through for the benefit of all of us so let him take his time and get it right.

My sister, the professional baker and cake decorator once told me that my camera takes great pics. My reply was that I thought her oven baked great cakes.

I do, but the word evolution is what everything goes through, that includes the internet

The one thing that I hope Pekka doesn't introduce is karmas and reputations etc...because I just find it not necessary, if people are going to say something, why not just say it in public rather in the karma and reputations etc...?

I'd love to know what that forum was :)

From the start preserving familiarity and feel of POTN has been major consideration. Also URL's are fully compatible etc.

Basically the seat, view from the window and steering is very familiar, but the engine, suspension, dashboard and transmission has been rebuilt from scratch to something where old an new features are rethinked and hand-made to be as luxurious, non-obtrusive, usable, helpful and comfortable as possible. Design-wise, a big challenge has been adding all the neccessary new features while keeping UI clean and simple. I assure you, you will have no problems using the new site, it could be even fun :)

Basically like a "Like" button on Facebook where people give thanks for helpful users/posts.

"Like" is a bit different issue, see https://photography-on-the.net …ghlight=like#post14858890
So, there will be "like this post" for members only, but in very unobtrusive way.

A bit off topic and not trying to hijack this thread, but a quick question, since Pekka brought up the 'like this post' thing.

On a very well known art and photography sharing website with a giant community, there is a fave button next to all photography and art images. People there have been a little up in arms over this feature, as some feel it is used too much. When a user asks for critique and comments, the user is flooded with tons of 'faves' and not many comments. Do you see that as becoming a problem here with the inclusion of a like button?
