IPS - in-plane switching

I don't know what that means. Do I need one for photography editing? I have just the standard 1280x1080 27" Acer. Is that good enough for paid work or not? Most folks talks about the Dell u2711, but it doesn't have backlight. Sorry I'm a newbie when it comes to monitors. Any help would be great.

IPS monitors are generally considered the best for colour reproduction, particularly colour quality and colour accuracy.
Have a look at this site - it covers most of the newer monitor technologies - http://www.tftcentral.co.uk …es/panel_technologies.htm (external link) - and maybe try this one first also - http://www.pchardwarehelp.com/guides/lcd-panel-types.php (external link). HTH.

In addition to better color accuracy, IPS monitors have much better viewing angles. The cheaper TN monitors will shift color as you move your head side to side and brightness with change quickly as you move up or down.

And of course the u2711 has a backlight. All LCDs have a backlight. You wouldn't see anything without it. The backlight plays a key role in color reproduction so even though two monitors may use the same panel, if the backlight is different, they'll have different color accuracy and gamut.

Some of the non-IPS monitors are so horrible you'd need to hold your line of sight perfectly square to the monitor in order to be able to edit with the thing. I have a Dell laptop that shifts color and density significantly over just a few degrees.

My wife has a 20" Dell desktop LCD and the difference between being seated directly in front of the screen and standing up 5' back is at least one stop.

Suggestion: Google on "best photography monitor" and read the reviews/recommendations.

Also do you need narrow gamut (as in sRBB) or wide gamut (as in aRGB) in your monitor. If you don't know you need aRGB, very likely that a sRGB monitor will be fine. In either case, you should get a calibration kit (Spyder or Munki) to color calibrate the monitor periodically.

Ahh I see. Even when I calibrated my Acer monitor it doesn't look rich in color at all compare to my iPad and iPhone. When I sit the color is accurate but when I stand up the color shifts color. I'm assuming that the IPS monitor will elimate that? BTW, I'm using spyder color vision to calibrate the monitor.

I have a Dell 2410ips monitor and there is evidently an issue that never gets discussed for those who wear glasses?

I have trouble often if my head is not straight on to the screen where I see bad fringing on every ips display I have tried?

Also do you think that Photo Editing was only invented when the IPS display was debuted?

The important thing is a properly calibrated display more than the technology of the display and there are a lot of them that can be calibrated without having to go with IPS.

How strong are your glasses?
I've never had a problem.

Not very strong at all.
I think it has more to do with diffraction than anything else?
It happens though with desktop monitors but has never been an issue with an iPad somehow?

I get some CA at the periphery with my glasses but when I center my gaze on that area it goes away.

One thing I have noticed, my glasses are harmonized for arms length reading (maybe a little closer) but my monitor is probably 1.5X farther when I'm at my desk. I have to sit well forward to get things in sharp focus which causes back tension.

Next exam, I'm going to have an "editing pair" made so I can sit back just a little farther.

Also I noticed that Kevin Kubota has a black housing around his monitor. Does that help with color on the monitor? What IPS 27" monitor do you guys recommend?

If you had a Mac and wanted the thunderbolt dock functions and a narrow gamut monitor....hard to beat Apple Thunderbolt Display. If you want a wide gamut monitor, hard to bead Dell U2711.

Jay,

I use a specially tuned set of glasses for my PC, its useless for general reading but is perfect at the PC, both for the screen and any reading matter I am referring to on the desk.

A lot of people held on to their high-end CRTs until IPS was invented.
