Ok, I have to ask. What is the key to keeping the oil "circles" from merging into larger circles until just 1 big circle? I always have to shoot very fast after stirring in the oil.

Well, the soap is the key. Without it, as you have learned, the oil bubbles quickly merge into one another. I have found out that if I get the right soap/water mixture, the oil bubbles stay static for a long time. But getting 'that' right mixture is the difficult part, IMO.
