For Christmas I got a cheap twin flash unit which hopefully will help spread the light better especially with the home made diffusers.

There is little to get photos of just now, but I took a few last night to see if the light evened out - so I have a bit of experimenting over the next few weeks as subjects offer themselves up in the insect world... The diffusion is quite large and can get in the way a bit but I hope it will be worth it in time.

The 4 images are of the nose of our Bilbo Baggins Cat, strawberries in a dish from the fridge, an old screw and a rusty hinge...

Looking good. It would be interesting to see a picture of your diffusers.

I have the 3D printed heads from https://www.macrodiffuser.com/shop (external link) and inside each I have put a bit of Vellum paper, then over the outside some packing foam held on with sticky tabs (inside piece) and velcro.

There is plenty of room to add more vellum if I decide to try more diffusion.

It's a bit bulky and protrudes well in front of the lens which can cause a bit of a problem, but one I will live with until I can get a better setup if one exists!

Looks like it could lose a lot of light, but I have to admit it seems to work well.

Not too difficult to work it if you don't recognise it...

They were first made in the 1920's but as recently as the 1960's - though I have no idea how old this vintage item actually is...

Looks like the knife has nicked the outer frame a few times!

It probably got a lot of use once upon a time - but not been used by us in many a year!

I should imagine with a good soaking in rust remover it might clean up enough to use, but nowadays new knives are cheap enough to replace old ones when they get too blunt...
