Jan 16, 2021 20:03 | #3823 Need some help... What's the technique and the secret to these water drop shots? First image is after a long line of failures and is a 15 shot focus stack. It sort-of works in my mind, but the watch face is not as distinct as I would expect. Second image was an earlier attempt that just didn't work. There's something I don't understand about lining the camera up with the water drop and reflected image. Is there a ratio, or size guidance, on what goes where in the alignment? Thanks! Instead of water, try glycerin drops. Because glycerin has greater viscosity than water, when used on the bottom of a surface, it will produce a larger drop and hold its shape longer. This makes a small lens that makes the subject in background become in focus. Just focus on the glycerin drop. Available at local Walmart.

MikiG Goldmember 1,179 posts Likes: 400 Joined Feb 2011 Location: Ireland More info | I think your problem may be surface tension of the water drops on the metal surface distorting the drops. Try suspending the drops from the bottom of the metal object using a syringe to place the drops where you want them. Place the watch face slightly behind the drops (upside down) & it should appear right side up in the refraction. Glycerine mixed into the water can help to get the water to stick onto the metal surface.
