Hi,

I have recently purchased the above lens for my canon 7D. When I have the lens attached and depress the shutter the lens makes a kind of buzzing noise. Also when I take a picture the shutter opens for a few seconds making the image blurry. Does anyone know if this is a problem with the lens or something I am doing?

Cheers
Vince

The 100L should not be buzzing. It is probably the IS motor making the noise. Try it on another body to see if the lens still makes the noise. BTW my 100L does not have any sound on my 7D.

Can you post one of the blurry images to flickr? the EXIF data should remain intact it will show settings that may lead to the shutter staying open so long.

The buzzing sounds like it's likely the IS motor, louder on some lenses than others, if you flip the Is switch does it still buzz? Different IS lenses make different levels of noise, unfortunately I can't say what is normal for this lens and what isn't.

The only noise I hear on my 60D is the USM (Ultrasonic Motor )it is a very quiet lens. Call canon service they will attach that lens to the same body you have I had a question about a lens making an odd noise on my 60D it turned out to be normal.
Hope this helps.
John

Mine makes a faint humm noise after focusing. I attribute it to the USM. Mine is also spot on perfect though.

The length of time the shutter stays open should not be a function of the lens. The shutter is controlled by the body. Unless there is something weird electrical going on, this sounds like a problem with settings. Posting an example with exif might help.

The buzzing might be the IS. I don't have mine with me, but it is a pretty quiet lens. Easy to test: turn the IS off. If the sound is gone, you at least know where it is coming from.

Mine makes a repetitive buzzing/rasping sound when I turn the camera on.

But that's because I dropped it on a hard surface and it's going off for repair soon.

Minus the buzzing noise, which as has been said can be a USM thing, A couple times I had a communication error with my original tele due to bad seating of the contacts. It displayed a long shutter lag (around 1 second) but then game me a lens comm error after a couple shots. Just my 2 cents.

Mine is also very quiet. I can hear a very faint noise if I listen for it, which I assume is the IS.

I just bought this on Friday.

The noise is probably the IS motor. On my lens it's very quiet, I really have to be listening for it to hear it.

The shutter speed issue.... well, it's hard to tell without knowing more. Be aware that macro shooting requires more light than normal shooting. Indoors, with ISO 100, f/11, 1:1 magnification and (of course) a tripod, it's not a problem at all for me to hit 2 seconds exposure times.

Hi

I have turned off the IS and there is no noise. With it on there is a faint sort of groaning buzz is this normal. I haven't had a chance to test the lens outside properly. I will try inside with a flash.

Just put a 100 2.8L on my 1D3 and yes, there is some buzzing when the IS is on. Especially when there is alot of movement going on. This is the stabilsator working, and the buzz is quite normal. Although it should not be very loud, but more noticable than the USM.

Blurry shots, IS buzzing = very slow shutter speed?
