New Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS

I've never once felt I needed IS on my 50mm f/1.4, and I frequently shoot that at f/2 or f/2.8. I can't imagine a situation where I would need it at 35mm f/2. But again, as someone who shoots stills these lenses aren't for me, they're for videographers. They're the ones that are going to benefit the most from IS in a wide lens.

So like I said, it would just be smarter for me to get the Sig 30 1.4. Maybe there are some people shooting stills who would really want IS on a wide prime, bully for them if they want to lay out that much scratch, but I don't think that's going to be most people.

Haha yeah, well there's plenty of not-having to go around.
We don't have a lens similar to the immensely popular and useful Nikon 35mm f/1.8.
Nor a midrange 50mm lens with ring USM that's been released in nearly twenty years. (as Nikon also has.)

Now I don't want to be all "wah wah, Nikon has better toys than we do", truth be told I have the 50mm f/1.4 and all things considered I have no complaints about it. But man, you think it might actually kill Canon to release updates on lenses that people care about and would actually buy.

The only reason i dont have the Sigma 30 in my lineup is the MFD is crappy on it...

Which is why i have the Canon 28mm f/1.8 instead, and i played with the 35mm f/2...

I MIGHT get the 35mm f/2 IS, I have not decided...

Really, The 24 and 28 are good little lenses, but they're rediculously expensive, and this just looks to be continuing the trend...

The plus side is its making it financially more and more viable for me to sell my crap and jump to Nikon because Canon doesnt seem to be making anything I want and can actually buy...Just saying

I'm beggining to feel this way too...came to Canon just in January and by now I'm questioning whether it was the right choice. To be clear I'm happy with my gear but looking ahead it seems like I won't be able to upgrade for quite some time. The recent prices of Canon stuff are just crazy in UK. I mean the new 24-70/4L is announced at £1499 and the 35IS at £799. It sure makes me happy I got the EF35/2 used in mint condition for £170 last week. Compare this to receen Nikon releases (28/1.8G, 50/1.8G and 85/1.8G) and for somebody like myself their line up is beggining to look a lot more appealing....

Now you understand my 'OMG' remark.

Canon is leaving the door wide open for 3rd party lens makers with some of these new lenses. This lens gives Sigma's new 35 1.4 a great opportunity to be a big success.
Guess they don't want the 35 1.4L to have too much competition in the Canon line, but a 35 f2 with USM at $400 or $450 wouldn't be too bad would it??

I think the IS is primarily for video shooters, not photographers.

Unless you desperately need the IS, though, I don't see how this is going to compete with the Sigma 35mm f/1.4, at roughly the same price point.
