Thought this would make a cool shot. What do you think?

It lacks any kind of artistic interpretation (IMO), and is not technically good because of the badly blown-out highlights.

Different lighting, better angle, etc. might result in a more interesting shot.

I think the shot has potential under different circumstances. Its a little soft in places due to lack of depth of field and this would be caused by shooting wide open at F2.8. I would bump up the iso to 200 and shoot minimum F5.6 .Also.. using a tripod or support could greatly enhance the detail. The highlites between the fence boards do nothing for the shot and because the subject is square, I would sqare the shot/framing . I would also explore a black and white conversion with maybe an uderlying red or sepia color.
If you allowed editing, I could probably show you what i mean but its no garantee that the shot would be improved. Keep shooting and asking questions. Thats how we all get better:) Happy New Year to You!

I give you permission to edit the shot and show me what you mean. Thank you for your comments.

Photshop CS2 was used for this process.
What I did was: sqared/cropped the shot to fit the square format of the subject..... went into channel mixer, checked the monochrome box to remove all color and adjusted the RGB sliders...Red -66, Green +122 and Blue +48. This increased the contrast substantialy and maybe too much.. I sharpended the shot a little with Smart Sharpen but this file is already very lean so its tough to make many adjustments when I don't have the original file ( where all the informations is ). Again I did not want to increase the size of the photo after the crop for the same reason. In any case I think you will see what I was getting at in my original comments.

Thanks, these are nice but I still prefer the original shot. What caught my eye here was the copper pipe standing out from the weathered wood of the pier. The color version gives the shot what I liked and i think the original composition makes the pipe "pop" a little more to me. With that being said I very much appreciate the comments from everyone and will continue to try and improve my eye and technique.
