Hello everyone well I'm in the market for a new lens. I mostly do automobile photography. I'm usually not a fan of primes, but after using my nifty fifty last night for a shoot I feel back in love.

This is one from last night.

Do you think the 85MM would work well? I'd like to get nice bokeh and from what I've seen this lens is pretty awesome.

Opinions encouraged.

Thank you,
Joe Arney

You'll need much wider than 85mm unless you're taken the shots face on ... which would be dull. I've seen several great shots of cars taken with your kit lens ... Ok, not your kit lens but other people's ;-)a Try it in decent light at f8 or so and you may just be surprised and save a bucketful of cash.

I took this with the kit lens last night. I love the kit for a cheap wide angle, but I just want something better.

I don't mind being far from the car in order to get more in the frame.

You could set your 75-300 at 85mm and see if you like where you need to stand and how the shot is framed. If you like it then the 85mm could work. I'd want closer and wider personally as I think the detail would be better.

I used to have the 17-40L and found it to be excellent for car photography.

I agree with you here as well. I love getting up on the car and having it wider I just wanted something sharper than the kit lens although for the money it's not bad.

the 17-40 is nice, but it's a bit out of my range right now. Anyone have experience with the Tokina 12-24?

I had one and it's a smashing lens in all respects. I was very happy with it but never took a car shot as it's not my thing.

I also had a 20-35 2.8 Tokina earlier which was great for car shots. You can find them reasonably cheap on ebay now and again. I'd like another one at the right price as I'm a bit deficient on widey at the moment! Was fast and just super reliable in terms of keeper ratio. The 12-24 is very similar optically.

Your shots are sharp already.

I use a 24-70L for most of my car show shots and find it the best all around. I also use a 10-22 for the wild side.

I use a 24-70 f/2.8 at the track, but I'm 20-40 feet away from the starting line. I find it to be too much if I'm at a car show where I have to take a shot from within 15 feet of the car. I'm looking into a wide angle, like the sigma 18-50 now to fill the wide-angle void. Also may want to consider the 17-85 IS for an all in one lense.

That should work out doing well.

I've shot some cars in exterior shows, and nothing beat a wide angle. You can be 2-4 feet in front of the car, and take everything. Sure you have some distortion, but at least you ca take the picture without anyone in it.

I shoot auto photography as a hobby (when I'm not being a computer nerd full time.) The magazine I shoot for has a readership in Texas for 60,000+ and is heavy gloss (almost waxy... really nice quality!)

Here's the current issue, with my shot on the cover..

If that doens't work, it's here http://www.golilm.com/images/AdamsCover.jpg (external link)

Anyways, one thing I've learned with shooting static autos (and your shots there are very nice considering your equipment!) is to use small apertures for very crisp shots. Shoot from a tripod whenever you can, and use MLU if you have the chance. I shot the above cover shot with my 10-22! So as you can imagine, that C6 Z06 was VERY close. I was laying on my stomach in the back of an Infiniti G35 Coupe shooting from the trunk on a racetrack.

If you can, upgrade to the 50mm 1.4. I had both for a while, but there's just something about the 1.4 that's nicer. The images just 'pop' a little better. 85mm will be too long most of the time. Get a the Canon L 24-70 if you can swing it, if not get a sharp Tamoron 28-75 2.8. For track days or moving shots, the 100-400L is hard to beat (or the Sigma 120-300 if you want to drop some bucks and work on those biceps!)

Good luck and most of all just have fun with it!
