Is that even legal?!

It may be legal, but it's certainly immoral...

I much prefer the older style.

There is literally no reason you could possibly have for 'much prefering the older style'. The old kind are garbage, center pinch are much better.

Really? I've always bought Tamron lens caps to go on my Canon lenses, because of that.

You can get them on amazon or adorama for at most 5 bux...or we can spend $20 to get offical Canon ones now! woo....

Or from eBay at about a buck each! I replaced all of my Canon side pinch caps with center-pinch Chinese knockoffs about two years ago. They are working just fine and even have the Canon logo on the front.

I suspect that is where Canon gets its caps from. At about $19 each profit!

I don't use a hood so I find the "old style" much easier to attach/remove.

Notice something in this picture from Canon Rumors?

You can still use them the old way, there your argument is silly. Also not using hoods is silly.

Nice, I like them on my Sigma lenses. Hell, on the 18-250, I can have the hood on and still reach in and put the lens cap on, or take it off.

I ordered a Hoocap for my 17-55 f/2.8. Seems to be a pretty damn good idea! I hope it's just built solidly and closes up tightly.

My Canon HFG10 video camera has the center pinch cap. Maybe Canon will have a price-break on their $50 lens caps :)
