Hey folks,
I had problems previewing the CR2-Files of my Canon EOS 650D in Windows 7 x64. Canons RAW Software didn't work as well as the one from Microsoft this Camera Codec Pack. I found this though. http://www.ardfry.com/cr2-codec/ (external link) but it cost money, the trial version works. This is not perfect, it's not showing the Camera make and model in Windows

I think MS hasn't gotten around to extending the Raw Codec to include the 650D. By the time they get to it Canon will have a 700D, a 750D, probably a 800D too.

Are you saying that the Canon software that came on the disks provided with your camera don't show the images, as in ZoomBrowser and DPP? You have to install the upgrade from the disk for it to work -- you did that and it doesn't work?

For viewing raw images in windows Explorer i always use Fastpicture codec. Even trough the version i have is a couple of years old i have no trouble with my 5DMKIII files. Im pretty sure it will work with 650D files as well (i can test this if needed).
Well worth the small cost IMO.

Microsoft has a codex that allows you to few Raw files now, I can't recall where the download is for it though.

IIR it was out of date even when it was released.

The latest version (available at http://www.microsoft.com …oad/details.aspx?id=26829 (external link)) is current through the 5DIII and 600D/T3i, so it's not too out-of-date. It just doesn't provide coverage for the 650D/T4i.

Some Canon stuff and a little bit of Yongnuo.

Just loaded up some photos from my Christmas gift (T4i) and I'm finding the same issue. Has anyone figured this out yet?

As Tony has already suggested, why not try the software that came with the camera. Always a good idea I'd have thought.

Tried that already, hence why I was asking for some help. I also have purchased the fastpicture codec, which does not play well with Windows 8 (external link).

As suggested use the software that comes with the camera, and also IrfanView (external link) may allow you to view the RAW file, and it'll load much quicker then the MS viewer

Here is a list of supported Canon cameras from MS website (external link).

Thanks, I'm all too painfully aware of that list that as of yet does not include the 650D. Looks like Adobe Camera RAW 6.7 also does not support the .CR2 from the 650D, but was added to Adobe Camera RAW 7.2. RAW 7 is not compatible with CS5, so it looks like I have a bigger problem then just seeing thumbnails in Windows. If CS5 doesn't (and won't) support it I may have another expensive upgrade on my to do list before the end of the year, unless someone has a suggestion (other than just to use DPP, which I have installed but it is no Photoshop).

If you want to process the Raw files in the Adobe Camera Raw that comes with CS5, you will need to convert the files to the DNG format, which is a "universal" Raw format developed by Adobe. You download the latest converter from the Adobe site and you set it to convert to be ACR 6.x-compatible.

Thanks! I was reading up on DNG this afternoon, but couldn't figure out if I can have the computer automatically convert when importing from the memory card, or if I'll need to add another step to the workflow (arghh!).

Well, I don't know of a way of automating the DNG conversion/open in Camera Raw. You could likely come up with a script to do this, but here I'll admit to inexperience and ignorance. I wouldn't think the one extra step would be all that big, though, once you get used to it.
