Well, I don't know of a way of automating the DNG conversion/open in Camera Raw. You could likely come up with a script to do this, but here I'll admit to inexperience and ignorance. I wouldn't think the one extra step would be all that big, though, once you get used to it.

Installed the DNG converter, I'm thinking I could use it to convert the RAW files straight from the SD card to my computer, which really wouldn't be adding any step. Will take some shots and see how that work flow works. Thanks for your comments, and Merry Christmas.

Go for it! Just realize that DNG won't work with most non-Adobe apps. DPP, for example, won't work with the DNG format. If it was me, I'd keep the CR2 files as an "archive", because I do like to occasionally play with DPP.

Thanks for the heads up, never can be easy. Can't I just spend a thousand dollars on new camera gear for Christmas and expect it to just play nice with my computer? Guess not. This was something I did not even consider when weighing the 60D and the 650D.

Well, the simple answer is that for a new camera your best bet is to use the software that came with it if you are going to shoot with the proprietary Raw format. Until/unless the camera companies adopt something like the DNG format we are stuck with having to update our software.

I was using fastpictureviewer for a while. I liked it but i found once the trial period ran out it would take a lot longer to open up my images (raw and jpg). This was on both a windows 7 PC and Windows 8.
I had two trial periods with it (on each PC) and the same thing happened each time.
I know i could buy it, i was tempted, but its pretty expensive for what it does (which isnt much).
Back to Faststone for me. quicker and free.

Hello... I installed the MS codec (16.4.1970.0624) mentioned above today. The codec is dated 7/9/2013. Although it says that files will display in W Explorer, the pictures open in W Live Gallery, yet W Explorer does not display the thumbnails or previews in the preview pane.
Files are Canon CR2 for a T5i, using W7 with all current updates.
I agree with those above, having to open each pic for a preview is a hassle.
Am I missing something?

Thank you!
Jaime

Ive just got a 650D (traded for a 60D believe it or not) and yes, it seems Windows 7 wont display the thumbnails.
I found an old copy of FastPictureViewer WIC Codec Pack, which i believe came out in 2009 and was free or donationware back then, and it displays thumbnails of all my Canon raw files perfectly on my W7 64 bit PC.

The latest version cost $14,99, but IMO its well worth it.
