Is there an app that I can use on an i-phone that will create a GPS log that I can then use to add GPS coordinates to the EXIF of my shots.

I know there have been threads about GPS data loggers that create a time stamped log of where you have been and third party applications that can take that log and a list of pictures and add GPS coordinates to the pictures based on the timestamps.

Now that I have an iphone, I was hopping that there is a GPS data logger that I could use for the same purpose. (My google searches are getting bogged down with apps you can put on your kids' phone, or cheating spouse, to find out where they are and where they have been).

Is anyone using an iphone for this purpose? How are you doing it?

I use an app call GeotagPhotos (link: http://www.geotagphotos.net/en/ (external link)

They have a free trial version (I think the limitation is that it only logs 24 hours worth of data). What I usually do is that I turn on the app and set the logging interval (1 minute if I am on the move, 5 mins for the rest). Once you are back you can download the gpx logs from iTunes (under Apps, browse to your Geotag application and you will see there are some gpx files in the list).

Geotag runs in the background (you can start recording and minimize it to the background. You will then see the GPS logo (a small triangle) at the top right of your screen whenever GeoTag performs a GPS capture). Battery life wise it is pretty good, my iPhone5 (with SIM card removed) can record one full day (24 hours) at 5 mins interval.

When I am overseas I remove my SIM card from my iPhone and turn on Geotag. Remember GPS is disabled if you turn on flight mode.

Hey thanks for the info. GeotagPhotos looks great, I just bought it.

I don't currently use lightroom, this might be the feature that makes me pull the trigger on that, but, does anyone know of any other free or cheap apps that can apply the GPS data from a log to a list (or directory) of pictures.. including raw? I expect I will need to get lightroom for raw.

You do not need to use lightroom, I use DPP only and it works.

This is a short on how it works. You get everything set on the phone, then sync your phone time and camera time. After that start the app, go out and take pictures. Close or end the app that ends your trip, and email or send the geotag file to your computer. Then download your pictures to your computer. Then you open the offline program that you can download for free, you then pick your geotag file, then pick the photos to go with it. It will then tag your files. Now you can go edit or PP your files.

Breze Browser Pro will let you do that. Downloader Pro will append the GPS data while you download the images (at the same time allowing you to enter other metadata, sort by almost any EXIF field, rename ditto). Breeze Systems (external link).

Geotag (external link) and Geosetter (external link) are less feature-rich than the Breeze Systems offerings, but they're free.

After a quick look, it appears that neither of these programs will work with Canon Raw files.. maybe I'm missing something.
I will give the offline program a closer look.
I also took a quick look at: Geotag and Geosetter -- they may be the way to go.

Breeze Systems apps works fine with Canon's RAW files. It writes the metadata (as do PhotoShop and LightRoom) to an XML (.xmp) sidecar. AFAIK the only way to write the geotags directly into the .CR2 files is with Canon's wireless and/or GPS accessories.
