I back off to Hawaii in a few weeks time and this time I would like to take some underwater photos of the reef and fish at Hanauma Bay as well as getting some surf shots at the North Shore from being in the water near the wave.

I dont want to spend thousands on a purpose built underwater housing as water shots is something I will do only once in a blue moon.

I have come across afew waterproof bags on ebay, but am a little bit dubious as to how good they really are.

Has anyone ever used something like this, and if so, are the 100% waterproof?

Personally, I wouldn't risk it.

I'd get either a disposable, or buy a waterproof snapshot camera.

There's no such thing as a CHEAP underwater housing for a DSLR. At least not if you want one that you actually want to use underwater.

Have you considered getting a waterproof point and shoot camera to use instead of taking your DLSR down ? Something like a Pentax Optio WG2.. The link for that digipac says that it's good to 16 feet ? Personally, I'd rather risk a point and shoot- than a SLR and lens...

+1. I'd only trust those bags for splash resistance.

I use a Dicapac case, and have never had an issue. Highly recommended.

Anyone have any experience with these and how the plastic may affect image quality vs a expensive housing?

I was going to say the word CHEAP and underwater should never go together.... esp. if you value your gear.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I could buy a cheap waterproof point & shoot camera, but I feel it wont take good quality pics. I saw some amazing sealife last year at Hanauma Bay and would love to be able to take quality photos of it.

A point and shoot also wont serve for the surf shots I want to take. I also take a lot of wakeboarding shots from either in the boat that is towing the rider, or from another "chase" boat following behind. I would like to try a few shots this summer whilst being towed in a tube and have the rider jumping over me. That should provide for more interesting angles and perspective of the rider.

Obviously I dont want to do anything that will run the risk of damaging my camera or lens.

I will have a look at the Dicapac case that has been mentioned in this thread and see what they are like.

Thanks gain for the feedback..

Yes, it is 100% WP, but you have be careful with it. It is not plastic shell.
