Well that's what we call them in South Oz. Correct name Shingle Back Skink - yes they can lose that stumpy looking tail. Thanks for looking.

Nice shot Trace...
He's a pretty healthy looking one too.
It's been a good couple of years for them (also called a Sleepy Lizard)
I was out near Truro a couple of weeks ago and couldn't believe the number I saw crossing the road - have never seen so many in the one day. I reckon it would have easily been upwards of 100.
I felt like catching a couple and letting them go in the garden to deal with the snails I'm warring with.
That would have fixed the problem quick smart...

Not good to do that as they mate for life. A few years back I lived in the Riverland and came across a small cutting on the road side and the place was crawling with them. This one I shot on one of the mine haul roads we established at the now canned Olympic Dam expansion project. Relocated after I took this shot so one of the mine dump trucks didn't flatten it.

If it wasn't for the eyes it would be hard to tell if it's coming or going. Nice shot.

Thanks for the comments all. Yes very common throughout Australia. Slow movers crossing the road hence many do get run over by vehicles however they can get a bit of pace up when they need to. Can give you a good bite too - jaws like a vice. Been bitten once as a kid, don't want to again.
