I bet that was a pain! No pit! Normally the audience is restrained from approaching the stage by goodwill enforced if necessary by security. We, the photographers, normally do not get between the front row and the stage, but shoot from the center aisle, sides of stage or light board. On rare occasions we are told that shooting belly-up-to-the-stage is either OK or even 'required' ... I guess some talent likes that feeling. So, while we don't usually get quite the closeness we would prefer (as from a pit), we do generally get good pictures. At this particularly event, since we were allowed to shoot the whole show, we were there when the audience was 'released' to approach the stage ... the photographs of the crowds up to the stage are from the last three songs or so and we were allowed to flow with them.
