I'm in the process of converting an old PC into a NAS. I noticed that WD has introduced a new line of hard drives, dubbed "Red". According to WD's marketing blurbs about these drives,

WD Red hard drives are designed and tested for compatibility in the unique 24x7 operating environment and demanding system requirements of home and small office NAS.

Or, in my words, enterprise drives on the cheap.

Has anyone tried them yet?

I have a Synology 5 bay NAS to which I just added a 5th drive. I got a WD Red based on reviews and an article on pcper.com about the difference between consumer and enterprise drives. Unfortunately the first drive was rejected as defective by the NAS but its replacement installed fine. One big difference that's immediately apparent is that this drive runs very cool. My drives and temps are as follows:

WD Green 750 GB - 95F
WD Green 1T B - 93F
Old Seagate 750 GB - 100F (first generation of 750GB drives)
WD Red 1 TB - 88F
WD Green 1 TB - 91F

The last drive is the newest Green in the array so I guess they've improved heat over time. All of these drives were harvested from other uses when I built the array in August and while I haven't had any problems and I have SMART tests and data consistency checks scheduled weekly, I'll be replacing everything with Reds as funds permit.

They do look good. If you're interested in enterprise-class drives on the cheap look on eBay as well. I picked up two new Hitachi 2TB enterprise drives there for $172 recently.
