I've been struggling to find the right bag for what I want to carry. I have many bags, but none of them fit my need just right.

Really, all I want to be able to carry is a canon body (5D3, no grip), a 70-200 2.8 IS, a 24-70, and 580 EX II. The camera should already have either one of these lenses mounted and I need to accomodate their hoods, too. It would nice to strap a small tripod on to the outside, too.

Beyond that, I'd like it to be a backpack kind of bag and be no larger or heavier than necessary.

The bag I have that is closest to what I want is the Tamrac Expedition 4. You go to Tamrac's website and they show a camera with the 70-200 mounted plus other lenses and stuff.

Problem is, this bag is not really wide enough because as soon as you include the hoods reversed, things just don't fit. As I look at bigger/heavier bags, they tend to grow in length and not width which doesn't really solve my problem.

Thoughts on what might be a good solution? Thanks.

Really?

Out of the thousands of threads on the same topic I think you can dig up more than enough information!

Just saying....

To answer the OP's question, I own a Lowepro Flipside 300 that would fit your requirements. I can fit one dSLR body with lens attached, a telephoto (either 100-400L or 70-200 f/4 IS), and a third smaller lens, such as a prime or UWA zoom. There is also a Flipside 200 that is a little smaller.

I too have a Flipside 300 and it was the first thing that came to mind.

I had to get a little more creative with it though. I had to use the long divider from a Canon 200EG backpack along with another piece from that backpack and leave out the goodie zipper bag to get the following load out:

EW-83E hood ........... reverse hooded 70-200/2.8II:7D
10-22 ............... 24-105

By itself the reverse hooded 70-200 >just< fits where the 24-105 is. I have it set this way for a couple of reasons but the main one is that I can quickly stow a loaded 70-200/7D without re-arranging dividers lol.

This past weekend I was able to carry this load out:

24-105 ........... 300f4L:7D
10-22 ............. reverse hooded 70-200 and then the 83e hood just sitting on top of the big hood.

The Lowepro Flipside Sport 15L will fit your requirements for carrying your gear and also for being lightweight.

I've been using the Dakine Sequence for years. I traveled around the world with it and its been great.

I also pack my iPad and random junk in it too. Of course, it's helpful that the camera gear is in a separate inside bag that can be removed. I actually use the backpack for any multipurposes for any backpack.

I carry all my stuff (noted in my sig) and this image is not mine, just googled it for you-

edit: great link with photos....others may find the Flipside 400AW too tight?

https://photography-on-the.net …p?p=15232093#post15232093

I've looked at the Flipside 400AW. It's very comfortable (I loaded it and tried it in the store). All Weather. Better waist belt than the Flipside Sport 15L, but it's the latter one that I bought! It's smaller, and fits in my vehicle better.
I like the extra security with these bags (they open on the side that faces your back). I also like being able to keep the back side of the bag clean when I have it open and on the ground. I have a better chance of staying clean myself using these bags, when I put them back on.
Has anyone talked about the TT streetwalker series? You might need the Pro if you plan to carry a dslr with grip attached. (Though I'm able to *just* close the bag with my d300s+grip attached.)

You might want to check out fstopgear and look at their guru, kenti, or loka. The guru and loka both utilize ICU's, which are insert cases that you put in the bag. They come in different sizes so it's nice that you can mix and match. Also, when you don't have the ICU in the backpack, it functions as a regular backpack which is nice as well. I haven't tried the Kenti but have the Guru and Tilopa and I'm happy with both.

does it fit the 5dmarkIII with 70-200 attached. I may use the remaining space for a t3i with 18-200 attahed with 2 small primes and a flash.

I keep my 5d3 with my 100-400 attached, but I'm not sure if you can load 2 attached bodies in it. I usually kept an extra body in the bag.

Besides, the bag can handle a gripped body that I did before. I'm hoping to pick up a 70-200L and I hope it fits too.

FYI, I have fit two dSLR bodies -- 5D3 and 7D -- in the Lowepro Flipside 300, along with two lenses. The 24-105L was attached to the 5D3, while the 100-400L and 7D were each stored separately. There was still room for a Speedlite flash, too. I had to sacrifice the space usually reserved for the 50L to fit in the 7D, though.

I like the Flipside 300 because it is small enough to fit under the seat in an airplane. The airline we usually take to Myrtle Beach -- Spirit Air -- charges extra to use the overhead storage bins for carry on luggage.
