Hi everyone

I would like to run some lenses by you and have you help me rank them. In a couple of weeks I will have around $1500 to spend on a lens or two. What I am planning on doing with it is sports mostly and some wildlife.

I currently own a Sigma 70-200 2.8.

Canon 135mm 2.0L $870
Canon 200mm 2.8L $660
Canon 300mm 4.0L IS $1150
Canon 400mm 5.6L $1100
Canon 100-400mm 4.5-5.6 IS $1400

1.4 TC
2.0 TC

Sigma 50-500mm 4-6.3 $970
Sigma 135-400mm 4.5-5.6 $540
Sigma 80-400mm 4.5-5.6 OS $1000

Like I said I'm looking at picking up one lens and really respect the knowledge on this forum. If I have left a lens out please let me know.

Dave

1DS MK III, Canon 70-200 2.8L IS, Canon 24-70 F2.8L, Canon 50 1.8, Sigma 1.4 TC, Canon 580 EX, and lots of other stuff.

TO me, Canon's 200L 2.8 is kinda overkill, at least with your limited budget since you have a 70-200.

I'd say for what you want, if you have lots of light usually, 100-400 IS is a good choice.

How about Sigma's 100-300 f/4 to add to the mix as well? It is under a grand and gives great images.

Since you do mostly sports, having your widest as f/4 is nice. It would be good to pair with your 70-200 Sigma I think.

Get the Canon 100400IS for wildlife, keep your Sigma 70200 for sports. Add a 1.4xTC and you've got a versatile set up. Best wishes.

What sports are you planning to shoot? Gym sports are best shot with the 85mm f/1.8 and field sports with the Sigma 120-300. The 70-200 you have should perform adequately for field sports with the 1.4x TC.

Thanks everyone for replying. The sports I am looking at is field sports.

Would one of these lenses work??? I know they are manual focus, would this be a big problem?

Those are FD mount for older cameras. Don't buy them. You need quick autofocus for sports to capture action on the fly.

If I had 1500 bucks and wanted to buy the best possible lens for field sports, I'd wait until I saved up about $1,900 and would buy the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8. It's achingly sharp from what I understand. A lot of guys that shoot professionally use this lens with a monopod to get great field shots. It's an extremely heavy lens, but one of the best if you're really serious about shooting sports. It may take me a couple of years, but I'll eventually add it to my kit. Here's a link to a review on this lens:

Greetings,
I second to this. Save a bit more and get this Sigma 120-300 f2.8. It is very fast, sutiable for both outdoor and indoor sports and images it captures it outstanding. Enjoy...

Indoors is kinda pushing it, at least on a 1.6 crop. But for outdoors, nothing can meet the range it has. Still can't wait to get mine though.

Would the below TC work with the 70-200 and 120-300 or should I get the Canon TC?

Start working out at the gym while you're at it...

Check the product site for that teleconverter as it doesn't work with every lens. And if you're going to use one, make sure you have the lens mounted to a monopod by the tripod collar. Otherwise there will be too much stress between lens and camera.
