I am coming from a 60D where I used the small on board flash to trigger my 430EX. Reading through the manual and still not finding a clue on how to work the flash off camera. Do I need to purchase some type of trigger device to mount on the hot shoe?

5D3 doesnt have radio/wireless trigger build in (not like the 60d or 7d). So u need to get one of the wireless triggers like yongnuo 603 or 622c or pocket wizard or photix.

You will need a E-TTL cord that connects to your hot shoe or two wireless triggers one on camera and one for the flash.

You could consider getting the ST-E2 which will trigger the 430 via IR, or the new ST-E3-RT, but it will only trigger the 430 in IR mode. Lots of options, but some kind of accessory will need to be purchased for OCF.

Syl Arena - has info on all the different cheaper triggers. I would do a search on him. I don't have any experience with anything other than the pw.

Yeah, wireless would be nice - but I use the cord. The results are fantastic, so can't complain too loudly....

Wireless flash can run from cheap to expensive, and from manual to automated. Here are a few options:

1) Get a Canon ST-E2 transmitter for about $200. This is IR triggering (limited range, line of site) just like the built in flash trigger on the 7D. It can manage zones and uses E-TTL (automated flash power) if you want. Call it high function, low cost and iffy range and reliability.
2) Use Pocketwizards or a cheaper downmarket version of same (Cactus etc). This is full manual flash with RF triggering. Call this more money, low funtion (pure manual) and excellent range and reliability.
3) Get E-TTL RF triggering. Pocketwizards Flex does this, but for less money I'd direct you to the Phottix Odin system right now. High function, high cost, high range and high reliability.

If you have a 5D Mark 3, I would highly suggest to go with 600ex-rt.

Since you already have a 430 EX ..- you can get a ST-E2 or the yongnuo version of the ST-E2 - as long as you're ok with the IR/near IR type of controls.. Otherwise, something like the Pixel Kings....

If you go with Mini TT1 and FlexTT5 Pocket Wizards, you'll need to install new firmware to make them work with the 5D III. It bit of a hassle, but they will work. Perhaps sticking with Canon triggers would be easier for you at this point in time.

1Dx - 5DIII - 40D - Canon 24-70LII, 100L macro, 135L, 16-35L, 70-200 f4 and 100-400L lenses

I've been working with a set of the Yongnuo YN-622C wireless ETTL units. These things are fantastic. I've had the ST-E2, the 7D with flash commander, the 580EXII controlling a couple of 430EXIIs. These YN-622Cs are the ticket. Under a hundred bucks for a pair, then buy one of the Yongnuo speedlights and you're set.
