Hey Guys,

I know this will make me look like a dump ass but better safe than sorry. I have a shoot tomorrow for a magazine and they asked me for some vertical front 7/8s shots and I'm not sure what that angle is.

Can somebody please post a picture with that angle? I can't find anything on the web.

Thanks.

Who cares about my gear?

It's a shot that's in between a profile and a 3/4. For a typical passenger car: Set up your 3/4 driver's side shot, and then pretend you can see through the car. Figure out where the passenger side outside mirror is. That mirror will be somewhere behind the grille, or at the edge of the grille, assuming you could see through the car. To set up the 7/8, move toward the driver's side door, and the mirror's apparent position will move toward the fender. Stop when it's between the grille and the fender corner. Its exact position is of course not possible to predetermine on every car, but I hope that gives you the idea.

You may notice that despite the name 7/8, it's not exactly between the profile and the 3/4. It's closer to the 3/4.

I have a ton of gear, but my gear is just a hammer.

I really hate playing the game, "What is the client thinking"!

Wouldn't your question have been better answered by the client? In addition to the question that you didn't ask, which should have been, "At what height would that 7/8th shot be best for you?"

I wish you good luck & that you covered the angle with enough shots this morning to luck into the shot that they expect.

The person asking this question may not have felt comfortable asking the client to clarify what he meant because it may communicate that he (the photographer) is not very experienced. It's always best to make sure you completely understand what the client needs/wants but sometimes it's not feasible.

In my experience, a front 7/8 photo of a car is a view that shows the entire front of the car and a little slice of the side. So, if you stand directly in front of the car and position your camera so that it's capturing a dead-on front view and then take a couple of steps to one side or the other you'll have about a 7/8 front view.
