From what I understand the AF on the 60D is a bit slower than on the 7D. I was wondering, will the AF on a 60D be able to keep up for aviation shots? Anyone do aviation shoots with a 60D?

I know of at least two guys using a 60D in our Arizona Aviation Photographers group and I've yet to hear either of them say the camera caused them to miss a shot.

these were done with a 60D/18-200 kit:

I will add though that my in-focus rate was ~40% but I attribute 80% of the cause to the lens focus speed and 20% to the body.

Nice, thanks for the samples Dan. If I couple a 60D with a 70-200, 100-400, or a long prime it sounds like it'll be fine.

The 60D should be fine. I started with a 20D, then moved to a 40D before going to the 7D. I think after a while, what you find is auto focus performance comes down to lens aperture, light and subject contrast.

Actual aviation images from a 60D.

From actual use at real events, the 60D has been able to handle images of quick and fast moving subjects in the air and on the ground. There are no problems.

it's easy to get plenty of great air show shots with a Rebel XSi (450D) and 55-250IS or 100-400 so I would say yes, the AF on a 60D should keep up for aviation shots
