I was looking on B & H and came across this lens. I'm going to be looking to replace my 50mm f/1.8 soon and was wondering if anyone had any real hands on experience with this lens that they would care to share. If not, I'll probably spend the extra money for the Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM.

This lens is very sharp at the edges and overall sharp. it also gives you true 1:1 reprod ratio. however, it lacks HSM and FTM, and even though it has the new "DG" coatings, its contrast reproduction is wanting. I'd recommend you go with the 50f1.4.

got one. yea i have to say the contrast is alrite/a bit lacking. nothing a bit of photoshop couldnt handle.

i dont know why you would want to go from a f1.8 to a 2.8. i say if youre not in want of the macro function, get the 1.4. youll miss the extra light. i bought this lens to cover the 50mm range + give me a macro to use. a money saver? maybe hehe

autofocus on this thing sometimes pisses me off too. if you pick an area of flat color/smooth area wide open, it frequently hunts forever. im not sure if its supposed to be like this or maybe i got a bad copy. but as fStopJojo said, this thing is very sharp, as with almost all macro lenses

but at the price i got this at, it was a complete steal so i cant complain =)

Thanks, fStopJojo. Considering the small difference in price, your test shots, and the Canon being the faster of the 2, I'll pay the extra $100 or so and go for the Canon.

Excellent decision. Plus the 50 is rebated right now. :D
