i've owned this lens for a couple of weeks and i was finally able to get away for a few hours and snap a few in the big sur area. i had a very good copy of the brick when i bought the successor and the II is sharper. it is also travels better, displays little to no CAs and vignettes quite a bit more even stopped down.

my main concerns were sharpness and size/weight. i wanted a mid-range zoom that travels well and is a joy to use. so far i am encouraged by the new canon lens.

i've always had a love/hate thing for the brick and just a mostly hate thing for the 24-105L. i've formed these opinions after using both lenses extensively on FF and both 1.4 and 1.6 crop.

all shots were hand held and all were lightly PPed and sharpened unless otherwise noted. my camera is the 1ds mark III.

i'm taking off tomorrow for a couple of days and i plan to use the 24-70L II quite a bit. If there's any interest i'll post more pictures and thoughts then.

Great looking pix Ed! I like the color representation with the mk II. I will replace my brick in the future.

Hi Ed, I've used my 24-70L2 for a few weeks now and overall I am happy with it over my 24-105L. I am using it to complement the 70-200L2. However, the bokeh is definitely not as pleasing as the 70-200L2.

are you comparing bokeh for both lenses @ 70mm? i think that would be the only fair comparison. one thing for sure the bokeh isn't as bad as the 24-105L!

thank you. so far i'd say the lens is a keeper. the vignetting doesn't bother me because it's easy to remove and i add vignetting to probably at least half my shots. i want to get this lens in some good light and on a tripod. i should be able to do that in the next couple of days.

Nice shots Ed. The bokeh looks much better than what is represented in the photozone review.

They show onion ring OOF highlights but it looks very smooth in your shots.

Hired a 24-105 and then a 24-70 II over 2 different days, and the 24-70 II is streets ahead in overall quality (colour, contrast, detail & corner to corner sharpness). I think this lens is worth paying the premium for, well hopefully by the time I need to buy it it's a little cheaper. But wow, what an incredible lens to pair with a 5D IIi. Absolutely incredible combo. Just wish it was a little longer in the tele end...
