Back from a week at Big Bend in West Texas. What a wild and rugged place. Except for the Stonehenge II shots, I posted 2x1 ratios here, which seemed to work well for the images. One of the Rangers told us that we just missed the Fall flowers. Apparently the place exploded with them, quite possibly even more stunning than the Spring Bluebonnets (but don't say that to any native Texans!). Next year I'm going to think about going about 3 weeks earlier. Hope you like 'em.

My first time there... it's like nothing I've ever seen.

5/7 = 71%. If only I had done so well in my early college years....

Thanks... and what a price to get it. We walked back in the semi-dark, which is terrifying on a mountainside with hungry lions!

Appreciate the good words. I'm becoming a fan of the Poor-Man's-Pano: the 2x1 crop.

Pretty cool shots!

I have been to Kerrville's Stonehenge II a couple of times, it's pretty impressive, not as realistic, but very cool to see, it's as close to the real one I'll ever see. heh

Big Bend is one of those things that one has to see to appreciate, especially if you're a Texan and have not seen it. I love that place, I have been around 5 or so times, a different experience each time I have been. The only time I have not been is Winter, and I need to do that. The last time I was there, about 4 years ago, I was there at April 15th, it was already over 100 degrees there at Cottonwood Park. Since we were camping, we stayed at the Basin, which is very cool at night. That's the last time I have seen REAL stars since too! heh

It looks like you had a good time, and you have some shots that I don't recognize, and I especially like the desert road one, that is a cool shot!

nice series! This is my favorite part of the world. If I were to win the lotto today, I'd be retiring to that part of the world tomorrow on a couple hundred acres of land.

You ain't kidding, especially with the basin as the backdrop. We spent our last night in Alpine and drove over to Marfa to see the Marfa Lights. No sightings for us but we did meet a genuine True Believer there - bit scary to be honest. The sky was *impressive* up there with the Milky Way stretched from horizon to horizon.

This is my one night shot on the road leading into the basin. No stars but the skyline is pretty cool. 10 mm-ISO 100-30.0 sec at f - 22

And heck, I've been dying to share this one. Those buggers are fearsome. 65 mm-ISO 400-1-200 sec at f - 7.1

Cool shots! I do like the silhouette of the mountains, since I have been there, it makes me want to go back.
That tarantula is really something, I just saw one two weeks ago in Oklahoma, I got some shots of it, but nothing to brag about. The last time I was in Oklahoma I saw one too, that it pretty cool 'cause it has to be at least 20 years since I last saw any. That's good that you saw one there, too bad you didn't get to see a Horny Toad too! heheh (I'd love to see one of those again, I can't remember the last time I saw one)

I hope that you had a good time, I don't know how one can't out there though.:D

Speaking of Marfa, back in '86 my wife and I stayed in Big Bend, camping, then drove over to Marfa to (try to) video and photograph the lights there. (With a 35mm back then) Neither came out, it was too dark there to get anything, plus, I am sure it was mostly my fault. Anyway, we did see the lights, and I have to admit, it IS spooky to see, they do look exactly as they say, "Ghost Lights"... We got there right before sunset, and there were maybe 8 cars or so, then after it got dark, we were the only ones there, and it was DARK, I mean, DARK! heheh We almost had heart attacks due to us sitting in the dark, watching the lights move back and forth, (remember it was spooky) and all of a sudden from our right, in the West (we're facing South) and it was really, far away and it looked like a star low on the horizon. It kept getting larger the more we looked at it, and my wife said, "Let's go... Let's GO!", I said it'd be alright, nothing to worry about here... It kept getting bigger and bigger... It was starting to almost blind us, and we couldn't for the life of us figure out what was going on. My wife was almost getting frantic now, she demanded to, "GO, maybe it's a car!", I was not that calm myself, it was weirder than weird what was happening. (It was only one large light) It was so bright now, REALLY bright, and it appear to be on a collision course with us, we had the windows down (I said, "Shhh, listen...") there was no noise at all. I admit, I wanted to get out of Dodge, it was not a good feeling, so I started up the van, and was double-checking to see which way this super bright light was heading, just about when I was going to screech out in reverse to escape, it started to veer
slightly North, I thought that maybe we were better off where we were, this thing was almost upon us now. Then, we heard it, Choo! Choo! heheheh
Really, we didn't hear that, but we did realize the sounds of a train. :) (more of the 'clack-clack' sounds)
What is known as the Doppler Effect prevented us from hearing the train until it was really close to us, magnifying the (already scary) events to catastrophic proportions, at least in our minds. heheh
Remember, it was super dark, and it's eerily quite out there too, it is the desert, after all, and the way the train tracks were laid out, it made a beeline straight to us until it was almost across the road. After being slightly spooked by the REAL Marfa Lights, our minds made up for the rest of it, it is a night neither of us will forget, we loved it, at least we did afterwards. :)

We honestly did see the Ghost Light of Marfa, but, I don't think they're ghosts, it's something I don't know what it is, but when you do see them, it is a very strange feeling. So because I am a 'scaredy-cat', (sic) doesn't mean I am a believer of ghosts, now anyway. heheh

Here's a map (external link) of how the train tracks (if anyone's interested) are in relation to the parking lot we were sitting at, you can see how it would appear that the train was going to hit us.
The building and paved parking lot was not built yet at that time, they've really made it more tourist-y.
