A fun thing to do in that part of Texas, though I can't say it's safe, is to turn off the headlights while driving on the highway for just a second. It will freak the passenger out quite a bit and it will feel like driving into nothingness.

Thanks Y'all, it's always fun to look back and see what as sissy I used it be! :D:D:D

My wife told me what she actually said at the apex of it all, it was, "Maybe we're on a railroad track!"...
That would be crazy since we arrived and it was still sunlight, and was on highway 67, but still, I almost believed her! heheheh

I can't say that I have done that, it would be crazy, but, it does sound like fun. heheh

Actually, on a trip coming back from Colorado back in '77, my wife and I were traveling in the middle of the night, (for some reason) and I pulled a trick on her. Like you said, the dark can freak you out. She was asleep and we were going down through some steep canyons that was like a giant hole on some twisty road in the middle of nowhere, and I was going slow, so I thought I'd stop and get out. I did, and I literally could not see my hand in front of my face, literally, I'm sure there were stars, but all I remember is it was the darkest I had ever witnessed. I marveled at that for a short time, then I went around to the passengers side of the car to let her experience it too, she was still asleep, even after I opened the door. heheh
I quietly closed the door, then I knocked loudly on the window. (I know, cold-blooded) She was saying, "Randy? Randy...? ...RANDY!?!" In her mind, I'm sure she had fell off the edge of the Earth, because I was not there, everything was pitch black, and she had just awakened to oblivion... heheh
After a minute or so, I couldn't contain myself any longer and I opened the door to let her know she would not be spending her life in a complete limbo... That was the wrong thing for me to do, the interior light came on when I opened the door and, she had no idea who it was opening the door in a place she was sure was a doorway to Hades, and hoping this was a nightmare from what she would wake up. That scared her more than when I was trying to scare her, I think that she said something to the effect of, well, I guess I can't say that here. heheh
Anyway, she would not, under any circumstances get out of the car and look around to see what I said was the darkest I had ever seen, (like "nothingness", like what has been stated) she could care less, she wanted to get away, and now!

One would think I was a monster to my wife, making her endure all of these trips so I could laugh at her fear, but sometimes an opportunity arises and you can't let it go.

Sorry, I don't mean to take over your thread Glimmerman, but it was funny, and El Duderino did remind me of that trip.
I bet you have a story or two also Duderino. heheh
